Overcast
Total Time = 3h 02m 2s
Overall Rank = 155/273
Age Group = F4044
Age Group Rank = 5/10
Pre-race routine:

Up early, breakfast, pack the door and out
Event warmup:

Seriously - 70 degrees for July? After swimming around a bit I was shivering out of the water because it was so cold!
Swim
  • 32m 5s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 08s / 100 meters
Comments:

Of all my tris, half the time I get in the water and freak out. Today my goal was go get in the water, stay calm, keep away from the fray and just swim. Mission accomplished!! And it was a clockwise course so for a right side only breather it was great. Also it seemed like it was very spread out so there was very little contact (although I heard a different story from the men's wave). I'm very pleased with my swim.

Transition 1
  • 05m 6s
Comments:

T1 inlcudes a .3 mile run up a rocky dirt path - totally unfair LOL Someone gave me the tip to remove the wetsuit at the water's edge and run carrying - great tip! THANKS CHRIS! The run up is so long I made a strava activity of it at packet pickup the day before http://www.strava.com/activities/168078448

Bike
  • 1h 18m 15s
  • 24 miles
  • 18.40 mile/hr
Comments:

This is favorite part! Still trying to find the perfect saddle but once I'm in race mode I kind of forget about my crotch and just go. Overall extremely pleased with my ride. And it didn't hurt to know that I beat DH by 7 minutes on the bike (and he won the male masters division for the duathlon - same bike course) HEH!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing!
Transition 2
  • 02m 5s
Comments:

This transition also had a rocky run up. Ever try to run with Speedplay cleats on? Not fun. Then in transition I took a little time to fill my handheld. It was overcast for the first 4 miles and then the sun came out. I'm glad I took the time to fill it.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 1h 04m 33s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 10m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

I guess I didn't realize I was tracking to be 2 minutes away from my ultimate "under 3 hours" goal. So next time I won't stop to pee and might push the run a little harder even though it was kinda hilly. I certainly didn't push it - but I did have a good time.
What would you do differently?:

Be more aggressive on the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, walked around, got PIE!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

inexperience

Event comments:

Overall I was very happy with my performance on my first Oly distance!! 7 weeks to my first HIM! WOOT

Wow, what a great race!  I particularly like that you beat your husband - good stuff.  And being able to forget about your crotch is a good thing - I guess!

Congratulations on a great race! I've done that race a few times (and will probably do so next year again), and understand the challenge of that T1 run. That uphill path is no fun. Great job on the bike and run too.

Again, congrats and good luck on your upcoming HIM.

Yay!!  Super job!!  Way to focus on the race instead of getting sidetracked by things like swim freak-outs, rocky and long transition runs, and uncomfy saddles.  You remembered the needed little tricks things to make the race a successful one.  So what if you missed your under-3 hr. goal.  You still FLEW on the bike (and beat DH - nice bonus!) and threw down a very respectable race.  And pie!!  What a way to finish things off!!

You're gonna rock that HIM - you're totally ready.  Can't wait to hear about it!

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

I struggled on the bike while climbing the hill portions of the course. I do fine on long straight rides but really have a tough time while hill climbing. Any advice or training tips?

I’m terrified of biking hills and the triathlon I am registered for has several hills…on AND off road!! I’m willing to do whatever it takes to finish this triathlon. Any guidance?

A better bike is not the answer to meeting your performance goals. I mean if you gave Nike running shoes to a tortoise would he move any faster?
