Englewood, Florida
United States
Warren Loranger Englewood Family YMCA
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 28m 12s
Overall Rank = 110/200
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 7/13
Pre-race routine:

1/2 Bagel/water.
Event warmup:

Transition set up and zip over to the bike guys for some air. Light attendence this year, probably since there were issues last year.
Swim
  • 10m 56s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 44s / 100 meters
Comments:

I have only myself to thank for this. If training=results, than not training=this.
What would you do differently?:

Train? Learn to swim? Do duathlons? Seriously, I swim like a brick and train like one too. This is the part where Janyne tells me to go to Masters!
Transition 1
  • 02m 47s
Comments:

Not much here, only work a bit more on fluidity.
Bike
  • 38m 17s
  • 13 miles
  • 20.37 mile/hr
Comments:

The part I enjoy! I settled in quickly to the bars. Girl passed me right out of the gate (great job! she had a real good swim.) Settled in a bit behind my nice pace girl and off we went. Passed her by the half point on the way north. Passed quite a few bikes as we went. Saw Tattoo Frank and Sue at the turnaround. Went through it in a pack of 4, one of whom went down. I stayed long and wide and lost a bit of time (a couple of seconds, really) but I stayed upright, so I'll take it. Headed south and I upped the pace a bit. Passed a few more, but most of that game was done. Dropped the girl by this time and had one or two more pass me. My feet were out of the shoes about .25 miles from dismount, and the rolling dismount was flawless.
The road is worse and worse with each day that passes. I have stopped riding it for the most part after last year's crash and it sure hasn't gotten any better.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I passed everything from mountain bikes to aero rockets. Still have training to do, but I am happiest on the bike, that's for sure.
Transition 2
  • 00m 43s
Comments:

Helmet off on the way in. Racked bike, shoes on, grabbed belt and visor and headed out.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I'm very pleased with how this went.
Run
  • 35m 30s
  • 5 kms
  • 07m 06s  min/km
Comments:

All mental failure. Nothing more needs to be said.
What would you do differently?:

Train more? Get a coach? Do only bike races?
Post race
Warm down:

Headed to the sprinkler tent and stood for a while. Then back to the van to change and over to the food tables for a smoothie and orange slices.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of ability? Lack of consistent training? Lack of mental toughness? Lack of desire? Pick any or all of the above and you may be onto something.
Not the race I hoped for, but it is the race that I kind of expected. I have a serious decision to make in the next week or so.

Event comments:

RD seems to be getting better, since year one for him was a cluster and this was not. This is the local race, 5 miles from the house and even if I quit racing, I'll probably still do this race.

Despite your unhappiness with your race, you still put down a solid MOP effort, far from BOP and far from last, which is good IMO.  Nice work on the bike (speedy, all that fixie time paid off!), and whew! on not getting caught up in the crash or the bad roads.

Way to rock the bike leg!  You smoked it!

So glad to hear that the RD is improving things.  Now if they'd hurry up and pave that road for you.  ;-)

Laughing at your swim comments.  (with you not at you because we both know I swim like a brick too)

Awesome staying upright on the bike when the group went down!

Great work!

Yep, I like to leave the RR in metric too, makes me feel faster

Chris, you might swim like a brick but you ride like the wind and did a solid race.  On the very plus side, you weren't DFL in the swim so you're not the heaviest brick in the bunch.  Good job, you!!

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.
