Gels, chomps, drinks...what have you made?
Do you mind sharing some ingredients?

Thinking of making a waffle, but not sure what extra to put in it.
Salt, sugar,???

I use feed zone portables - its a pretty good cookbook and designed for endurance athletes/cyclists etc

I do rice squares - they are calrose rice (sticky), with cream cheese and jelly with a bit of salt - basically works similar to a gel square

Also on my last HIM I did these egg souffle things - eggs, cheese salt - individually wrapped - ate one about every 30 minutes - alternating between those and the rice squares and felt great coming off the bike

I have found the run is harder to carry stuff on though

Feed Zone Portables is really good. I make the same rice squares but use nut butter / jam or blueberries / chocolate chips .

I like that you can basically tailor the recipes to what works for you - don't like strawberry jelly, use grape; nut butter/peanut butter...etc

+1 for Feed Zone. Has really been a boon for me. (I really enjoy cooking though)

also, some combinations of

applesauce
honey
maltodextrin
salt
molasses
agave
rice syrup
flavorings

can be made into gels. Of course that works only with a gel flask.

I've heard pure maple syrup is good.  Ted King (Cannondale pro cyclist) swears by it and has just started a business selling it in packaging useful for athletes.  https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/untapped-pure-maple-energy.  Haven't tried it myself but it sounds like a good concept.

I've also heard of people using a baby food packaging thingy that is intended to put baby food into squeeze pouches.

Does anyone know how long the rice cakes last. Can or should they be froze? These seem like a great idea. Guess I need to get the book.

I did freeze some of the chocolate/peanut/coconut ones. I individually wrap them then put them in a ziplock bag with all the air sucked out. They say in the book not to do it without a vacuum sealer, but I didn't feel like dealing with ours. I haven't noticed anything funky going on with them.

There was a thread in the 'Nutrition' forum a couple years back... Maybe try a search using 'homemade gatorade' .. I think you might need to try a couple different spellings...

I like to make my own waffles and do have a favorite. Take a box of Krusteaz Belgian Waffle mix. Swap 1 of the three cups of water with 1 cup applesauce. Swap the 2/3 cup of oil with the same amount of pure maple syrup. Awesome. It pushed the calories in one 7" waffle to about 500 or so.

Occasionally I will throw in some mini chocolate chips but they don't travel well on a workout or race.

As with all things cooking, just play around with different combinations until you find one you like.

Use this guide as a tool to perfect your nutrition during all three disciplines in a triathlon. Because not everyone requires the same quantity of macronutrients, be sure to practice your plan.
