Subject: GatorSkins (quick question)
Hi Everyone,
I will apologize for my lack of tire knowledge ahead of time. I replaced my tires about a month ago after a blowout of my rear tire. I put gator skins on due in large because I have heard they are a pretty rugged tire. With that being said, would I be able to tell a large difference in resistance with these tires? I have stayed pretty consistent with my bike training but ever since I put the gator skins on it feels like I have a parachute behind me.

hard to say exactly how noticable, but gatorskins are heavier and do have a higher COR than other common "fast" tires such as the Vittoria  EVO Open Corsa or Conti GP4000S. Some charts on the web indicate up to 10-15 watts difference (search bicycle tire rolling resistance).

GatorSkins are good for puncture resistance but they're horrible when it comes to rolling resistance. Unless you ride on the worst of roads (gravel paths and/or mid-city where you can expect lots if glass), I would use something that actually rolls. I haven't had a single flat on GP4000S's is a combined 20k miles (between myself and my wife).

GatorSkins for training, maybe... But I would never use them for fast group rides or racing.

With the Gatorskins you're gaining flat resistance at the expense of higher rolling resistance.

I've been using Gatorskins on my training wheels for over six years and have never had a flat, even when I was forced to run through broken glass on the road.

Personally, I like the psychological boost I get from training with the slower Gatorskins and then switching to my faster Michelin Pro4's on my race wheels just before a race.
