Cooper Fitness Center at Craig Ranch

Overcast
Total Time = 1h 17m 14s
Overall Rank = 185/369
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 26/36
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30, coffee, out the door at 5:20 with my friend (his first tri).
Event warmup:

We set up our transition, walked around for a bit, at a banana with PB, then stretched and waited for the race to start. It was a pool swim, and they started late, so there was a lot of standing around. We were all put in corrals in the grass behind the pool based on projected swim times.
Swim
  • 07m 11s
  • 350 meters
  • 02m 03s / 100 meters
Comments:

I felt great in the swim (despite the fact that I hate pool swims). I was caught almost immediately by a teenager that started behind me (he was in line with his dad, so I think he should have started way before us).
He was the only person that passed me. I caught 5 other people during the swim (drafted off of the last person I caught for the final lap). I figured that meant I was having a really fast swim, but after looking at my time I guess I was just the only one that realistically projected my swim time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

T1 frustrated me. I had the best transition spot of all, about 20 feet from bike in/out. I was making great time, but then my shirt (compression top) wouldn't go on over my wet body. Spent about 30 seconds jacking with it. Wasted time.
What would you do differently?:

Take a little time to dry my body.
Bike
  • 38m 58s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.48 mile/hr
Comments:

Despite my lack of speed on the bike, this was my fastest bike split in a long time. I felt really good. It was a really fast course. I was thrilled with being able to stay above 18 mph.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 00m 48s
Comments:

The only thing that aggravated me about T2 was that there was race staff standing directly in front of my rack. I unsnapped my helmet as I running with my bike and trying to get around him and he yelled "hey, keep that on, you can't do that yet." Yes, I can . . . check the rules, man.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 28m 53s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 47s  min/km
Comments:

Another slow run, but that is just due to the weight I am carrying and my lack of running lately.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for 40 minutes and waited for my friend to finish. We grabbed breakfast after that was provided by the race.

Event comments:

Great race. I hope to do it again in the future.

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
