One more thing- I have done this race 4-5 times (can't remember how many years they've held it) and I want to say I've worn a wetsuit more often than not. BRING YOUR WETSUIT!!! Lots of times they announce it 10 minutes before transition closes and people have had to call spouses or friends to have them bring wetsuits. I know this because my close friend and training buddy did just that (I think 2 years ago but may have been last year). I have worn a wetsuit most years. FYI...

I did IMFL last year, and did pretty well at the Hy-Vee Championship. You'd be surprised how much that distance training can help on short races! Plus, you feel great afterwards because it is shorter than most of your BRICK training days .

It looks like they combined a lot of Championship waves/groups in order to get the Hy-Vee Tri off earlier. If this is how it plays out, they are going to have massive waves compared to past years...which is fine by me.

I've done the Age Group Hy Vee tri twice and last year I did the 5150 US Championships.  Same exact course for both races.  In fact, the pros do the same course as the rest of us too.

It's a great event.  I think there was 2,500 + people two years ago but I don't remember.  The swim start is about 1/2 mile walk around the lake from transition which is no big deal because transition closes quite a bit before the race even starts.  I like how everything is at Grey's lake for the spectators, but with them starting the pros first we (athletes) don't get to watch them race like we have in the past.

Wetsuits:  2 of the last 3 years, the water temp dropped at least 3 degrees going from non-legal to legal.  People were scrambling all over the place try to get their weitsuits.  I just brought mine with me, and I always do, and I was fine.  Better to have and not need...... I always say.  Last year it was not wetsuit legal.  I think the Men 35-39 wave had about 40 guys in the swim wave and it was rough at first.  Run in from the beach.  Dolphin dive.  Heel to the face.....  LOL.

The Age Group race is more of a Time trial start as described above.  3-5 peole enter the the water every 10 seconds or so.  It goes very fast.

The bike course has some decent hills and some of the roads are rough, especially when you come out of Water Works park.  There are also several technical turns.  Thankfully the turns occur in smooth parts of the course, but you need to keep your eyes down the road.

The $100 is not a bad price tag considering you get a Bike Jersey, Back Pack, and a hat ,and sometimes some other nice swag.  I now have 3 Hy Vee triathlon back packs that each of my kids use so that's not too bad.  The expo is good if you are in the market for stuff.  Lot's of samples and very cheap prices on nutrition too.

I love this race and I'm looking forward to it.  Been battling a leg issue all summer so my expectations are not high but still hoping to qualify for the 5150 US Championships next year.

Good luck everyone!!!

Bike course does indeed have some technical turns!! Be careful cornering, as I saw 2 pretty bad wrecks last year. Fast bikers being stupid really!

I see The Weather Channel calls for 50% chance for rain with scattered thunderstorms. Do triathlons proceed with possible rain or if it is already stormy?

Per the local news last evening, the rain would be the most likely late in the afternoon/evening well after the race has concluded. Should be nice during the race.

They will run this race in the rain but they won't run it in Lightening.  Last year's race was delayed 45 minutes as mother nature dropped a massive amount of rain on us while we were waiting for transtion to open.

If you have Twitter, follow the Hy Vee triathlon.  They do more updates there too.

Looking at weather.com, it shows only a 10% chance of rain during the day, so hopefully we'll be good rain wise, but it shows 16 mph winds. A little more than I'd like, but maybe it will be calmer right away in the morning. Can't be any worse than the first two sprint triathlons I did this year. One was in 40 mph wind gusts and the other it was 48* on the bike. My man parts hurt it was so cold.

Good to know about the weather constraints. I'm crossing my fingers we have no issues because rain + bike = bad! See you all there, good luck everyone!

If you are disappointed about the Hy-Vee race being forced down to a sprint level, think about racing in Cyman in Bondurant (real close to Des Moines) on Sunday, September 21st. Cyman has added an olympic distance this year and it should be lots of fun!
