Do most of you train for the Ride distance of the Tri you will be doing? Or do you train much farther? Meaning, if you are doing a Sprint with a 12 mile ride, do you go all out for 12 miles during training or do you do longer distances at a slower pace? I am doing a Sprint soon, and I train at anywhere from 20, 30 and some 50 and 60 milers. Even did an 80 today. Wondering if I am doing myself good or just the opposite.

You're doing plenty good. The more miles your spinning in that saddle, the better off you'll be. Yes, most of us ride and run much further than our race distances. My average weekend ride ranges from 3 to 5 hours (approx. 55 - 80 miles) in the saddle. My average weekend run is from 90 to 120 minutes (approx. 12 - 15 miles).

Every mile you ride your bike is good.

For Sprint/Olympic races, I definitely ride further on training rides than the race distance. Same with swim and run training.

I think it's best to train for above race distance for each single event, as when you pack them all together, they are by default harder due to the one after another schedule, and perhaps it's just me, but I think KNOWING you can do x amount in x amount of time is a good confidence boost... But I am new to this

To gain speed, do 3 different types of sessions per week, long rides to gain endurance (and that needs to be longer than the distance you are going to race for sprints and OLY), a long interval session to raise FTP and a short interval session to gain top end power. You shouldn't do more than two intervals per week unless you have years of training behind you already, just too taxing.

Your long rides will pay off in a shorter race as you gained the endurance to hold a higher pace longer.

For best results, train at a variety of intensities. You'll work various aspects of the aerobic system. So yes, those bigger rides are doing you some good. Do make sure to get some shorter & harder sessions in there as well though, as has been mentioned.

^^This. I like to KNOW that I can swim that 1500 m and still have gas left in the tank, and unless I am running an errand or riding to the gym, all of my bike rides are over 25 miles.

Last year, a LRS had a couple of elite runners come in for Q&A. One of the things that I though was interesting was that the marathoner (I have only done halfs) said that it was important to not only train at the race distance, but to include speedwork in some of those workouts. That way on race day, not only is your body ready for the effort, but your mind is as well. I don't apply that to all 3 legs in a single workout, but I will apply the philosophy to my bricks (of course, I don't go over Oly at this point).

For Sprint, Olys, and HIMs I ride over the race distance. For IM I only rode once past 112 miles, now I am training for my second IM and I don't plan on riding past 105-110 miles. Also, as people mentioned, make sure you mix your long rides with shorter sessions to work on speed.

In general, for the bike, the more time you put on the saddle, the better. But do it in a smart way, don't do only long slow rides!

Great. I have always wanted to know I can do the distance before a race. I do need to add speed work to the ride. I usually ride hard for the first 20 miles then drop down a couple miles an hour to finish x # of miles.

For sprints, generally people will be able to get in enough to cover the distance well enough at least a couple times a week. All the additional riding is for more aerobic conditioning. The harder rides can stress things a bit differently than the easier ones, depending on just how hard you go, but having a strong aerobic system is essential for any distance tri. You get less per time out of riding easier, but you can ride a whole lot more when doing so and can more than make up for that.

Also, for short course it isn't so important to get in the really long rides so much as just getting in "lots" regularly, as in a solid weekly total. For many that ends up being a longer ride on the weekend because of tighter scheduling during the week. The time can be split up various ways, but it's most important to just get it in somehow or other. For longer course racing, you do want to get used to being on the bike for longer periods of time.

For sprint and Oly I ride the expected bike leg time + the expected run leg time.

Example: sprint of 45 min ride and then 25 minute run means that I would train the ride for 1hr10min

I don't know if I read to do that somewhere or came up with it on my own. I don't know that there's any strong science to back it up, but it's what I do...

This has been said, but when I make my own training plans (or modify an existing one), my standard 6 workouts per week are:

Swim Long
Swim Fast

Run Long
Run Fast

Bike Long
Bike Fast

Then I add the additional workouts based on need and schedule.

I train as if I would do double the distance of each leg.

I do as well, except for the run. My body starts complaining pretty loudly if I try to run more than 30 miles a week.

I have a philosophy of progression when it comes to cycling for a tri (everything up to half-IM): (1) be able to ride the race distance, (2) be able to ride the race distance hard, (3) be able to ride for the entire event time (what you expect or have a goal for the entire swim-bike-run final clock), (4) be able to ride the entire event time hard. Obviously 3 & 4 will require more than the race leg distance, and likely 2 will as well in order to have the endurance base.

For a sprint I wouldn't ride 50 or above, even 40 seems too long.

Ride harder the 20 and/or do bricks. Ride fast intervals, practice your high intensity, explosive performance, fast accelerations not endurance. Consider if the remaining time can be refocused.

I wouldn't place too much importance on the relationship between training distances and race distance. focus on the energy systems you want to develop and the right duration and structure of training to do a good job of that, all of this will cross over into performance at the race distance. of course there will be greater emphasis on speed than endurance or vice versa depending on your target events, but training at the race distance over and over again is probably counterproductive. the benefits of longer training sessions are often just to get used to performing for the duration a race and that benefit can be had quite quickly.

my understanding for the bike portion on training rides is not so much being able to cover the distance but the planned time you will be on the bike, especially for long distances.  You need to have your legs understand what it feels like to spin on a bike for that long of a time frame.  For example for a HIM if you plan to be on the bike during the race for 3 hours then it is more important to hit the 3-3.5 hr mark during the ride.  But against that is just my opinion and I am in no way an expert.

I own both a road bike and a tri bike. I am wondering which bike I should be riding during off season training, or does it matter?
