Subject: Double Brick
Hello this is my first tri (Aug 23rd), reverse sprint tri (5k run, 10mi. bike, 400m poo swim). I'm on the 9th week of "12th week couch to sprint plan".

The plan says:
Double brick!
Endurance
30
Ride 15' - easy - just get the legs going - focus is on nice smooth pedaling.

After 15' hop off the bike and hit the 1st run. After the run, you hop back on your bike and spin for another 15' - (5' easy/5' hard/ 5' easy) again - and go right into the 2nd run!

------
I'm reversing the above because my race is reverse sprint. My question is, what is the purpose of double brick?

Thanks
Phebes

The purpose is generally to get used to the feeling of the transitioning between the bike and run. You get to do it twice in one workout.

But the other good thing about the double brick is that it allows you to extend the length of the workout. You'll probably find you don't fatigue as much in this workout vs i f you did the total bike first and then the total run (or in your case the total run and then bike).

Since your race is a reverse sprint, you probably won't find the transition from run to bike that difficult-- therefore the first purpose of this workout might not be needed. But you'll still benefit from the second part (extended workout, reduced fatigue).

Yes, working on the transition between the sports. This one has 2 bike to runs instead of just one. It also does have a run to bike in there. I'd probably just jump back on the bike for a few minutes if you want another run to bike.

Phebes, thanks for posting this question.  I'm doing my 1st tri in 3 weeks and this is my longest week of training before I start tapering down.  I have a long bike and a short run scheduled and breaking it up this way helps it seem more doable.  The transition practice will obviously be good too.  Keep up the good work on your training and thanks again for all the questions you ask!
