Subject: Brick distances for a half
I raced Ironman Racine 70.3 last weekend and in 3 weeks will be doing Steelhead. I'm doing a 50/10 brick this Sunday (approximately 7 days after Racine). Does this seem like a good idea? or should I not even bother with a long brick being that I am so close between events. Thanks

My two cents: I don't think I'd do a brick of that length with your race coming up so soon. What is it that you want to get out of the brick workout? Short of something psychological or a chance to practice nutrition (if that didn't go well), I don't see the value. It might not be detrimental, but I just don't know that it would be of much benefit at this point.

Yeah, I don't see the value in this type of workout. IMO, your better off hitting the bike long and hard and bagging the run. Building more bike fitness is never a bad thing. You're not going to build much fitness by only riding 50 miles (unless you crush it) and then you'll potentially ruin any training opportunities for the next couple days by going out and running 10 miles after it. Go ride 70-80 instead.

I would never do a brick that long. Honestly the only reason I ever do a brick is to work on T2 time. I will do some short 30min rides followed by maybe a 1mile run before a race just to get my HR up a little and make sure my T2 is going to run smooth. Other than that I think bricks are pretty useless.

There really is no need to do any bricks at all if your concern is building fitness.  However, bricks are good for learning and/or testing pacing and nutrition.  So the question I ask myself when planning a brick is how far do I need to bike/run (or possibly swim first as well) in order to feel confident with my pacing and nutrition plan.  For me, the answer is usually around a 30 minute warm up on the bike, 2.5 hours at HIM effort, then a 35 minute run.  Within 35 minutes of the run, I usually have a good idea if I executed my plan right.  It should be the point where I just start to get into a groove and feel really good.  If I'm struggling in any way at that point, I know I did something wrong.  I don't need to run 10 miles in order to figure it out.

Just my 2 cents of course.

Mark Allen does not recommend doing bricks even for fulls wuth runs longer than 20 minutes. I stuck to this for IM training in 2012 and it worked very well for me. Prior to that I always did long bricks, when I stopped my results sky rocketed. 20 minutes to train your body how to run off the bike, that is all your need. Add the other 8 onto a stand alone run at a dif. time during the week and you will see much better results.

Great advice. I am signed up for Steelhead and was planning on doing a similar 50/10 this weekend (2 weeks out), just to see where I am at. ( I don't have Racine in my back pocket), but maybe I will go 60 / whatever run miles to see how it feels.

Great advice all. I'm not going to do the 50/10 but will ride 50 and run for 30. I'll get my 10 mile run in mid-week.

My issue is that I am currently deployed and training outside is proving difficult, especially on the bike. I have found a safe 10km running loop but I am struggling with the bike training.
