Subject: New Bike or No?
Been doing tri's for three seasons now and really enjoy it. I have an older Quintana Roo with 650's that my sis gave me - probably at least six or seven years old. It fits me perfectly. I've gone from averaging 14.8 MPH on a short tri last summer to 17.3 MPH on a short tri this past weekend. Averaged about 15 MPH on a half ironman in April (56 miles). My goal is to improve and better my times - and winning something in my age group is always nice. Common sense tells me that I probably need a faster bike. But I'm torn with 1). spending money on something I may not really need; 2). Wondering if maybe I just trained harder I'd be faster, 3). wondering if I train my heart out if I'll still be slower because everyone else has lighter, faster bikes.

Thoughts?

taking for granted the new bike fits as good or better than the old one, and that you pick a "modern" aero frame, then yes it will be faster.
How much? Hard to tell.
Worth it? Depends on how you define worth it.

I firmly believe that no bike purchase is in vain.

Spoken (okay, typed) like a true died in the wool N+1 cyclist.

And a big +1.

I am in the market for a new road bike, at several local bike stores I will test ride several bikes. Other than basic fit and components, how should I compare them while doing a test ride?

My expectations for the quality of this years’ Triathlon world championship were fulfilled. This was because of the superb location that is like no other along with having the top triathletes present.

There is a marvelous destiny out there waiting for you too, but only if you are willing to take chances and put yourself on the line.
