Pre-race routine:

WARNING - This race report is of little value. I'm just posting it so I have the times, etc in the log.
Swim
  • 1h 30m 26s
  • 4224 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

Got pulled when I was about 700 yards from finish to swim to shore. Lightning. I just doubled the first lap. Fair enough since I was negative splitting with more open water and better navigating on second loop.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. It was the one thing I kinda made my goal on, to swim in 1:30. Weather is the weather. Felt fine
Transition 1
  • 15m
Comments:

T1 negated for the weather fiasco and long walk back to transition. I totally made this time up and included in my "unofficial" time above.
Bike
  • 7h 40m 46s
  • 112 miles
  • 14.58 mile/hr
Comments:

a bit of a fiasco. The course is beautiful. I can blame the crazy weather for some but the fact is that I didn't train for the distance. People talk about the hills, but they are just like home. Had to go crazy slow down the descents in the storm, but even when it dried up, i was a chicken on the long downhills.
What would you do differently?:

Bring rain gear. Might have had a touch of hypothermia given the way I was starting to get drowsy on loop 2.
Transition 2
  • 06m 53s
Run
  • 5h 19m 9s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 12m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

went half decent for 8 miles or so and then totally bonked. Probably walked half of the run.
What would you do differently?:

Don't show up to a race thinking I can just knock it out without putting in the long runs in training.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed my shit and stumbled to the car to hit the camp site. I would have liked to stay to see Paul from Bikeway finish, but I was spent and freezing. My dry clothes bag had gotten waterlogged throughout the day too.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Official time was 13:52 but that was BS as it didn't count half the swim and T1. Corrected for above. I got the race results that I trained for. No biggie. Time to start training to get faster at shorter distances. Oh, and my attitude. I was pretty grumpy for someone who was getting to do an IM race, but at least I hid it from the spectators and athletes. Managed to smile and ham it up, but I just wanted to get through.

Event comments:

This is a fantastic race with great scenery and more energetic volunteers than you can shake a powerbar at. If long course if for you, I highly recommend it. And having a shitty personal day, I got to race with some people who were really giving it their all to be an Ironman. Very inspirational.

way to go sticking it out for the finish.

sounded like very tough circumstances, as I had a friend who did LP...she got pulled on the swim as well.

quite demoralizing way to end the swim, and a wet bike course is no fun either IMO.

Way to gut it out in less than perfect race conditions! Congrats on being an ironman!

Way to hang in there Ironman!

I raced that course in the monsoon of 08. Going downhill was scary as hell, and it doesn't sound like we had anywhere near as bad conditions as you did. Bad weather on an already challenging course is terrible. Good work.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

I have Bontrager Race Lite wheels. I was looking into renting Zipp 303's or 404's for race day for Ironman Lake Placid. What time will I save?

I am running Boston in April and Ironman Lake Placid is in July. I have been told that it is ambitious to think about doing an IM so close to a marathon due to the recovery time. Any suggestions?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.

If you are calm while everyone around you is losing it, you probably don’t know what the hell is going on.
