I am a newbie (soon to be) triathlete and was wondering if there were any clubs in the Grand Rapids area that you would recommend for a beginner? I've checked out a few but it seems as if everyone is biking 20+ mph and running 6-7 minute miles. I would be dropped within the first few minutes!

I am not in one, but I would suggest Team Apex, they do tri's and multisport. Some good athletes for sure, but generally just normal people staying in shape it seems. Have met a number of them, and went to HS with the founder. Good dude. Male/female members. Good luck.

+1 for Team Apex. I've been training with a few of the guys this season and will be joining them officially in 2015.

Thanks guys. I will check them out.

Kevin - really enjoying the website. I live a few miles from Bostwick and was going to do it next year.

Village Bike has a tri team and from my understanding their members range from newbie to IM....

The only other local club I'm somewhat familiar with is Blink however they don't appear to be too interested in new members.... Definitely some serious triathletes but also have a range of abilities from what I've seen at races...

Regardless, if you're new to the sport and want a club to meet new people and pick up tips etc., I think it's a great idea...

This site is a great place to learn as well, then you just apply what you learn and decide for yourself what works...

Good luck.

Am update... I ended up joining Apex and so far they are a blast. Haven't actually gone on a ride or anything yet, but they blew up my phone with updates on my welcome post on Facebook

Welcome to the dark side

If you need any advice on anything tri related, just holler. I've been racing since 2008 (all distances, but prefer long course) and would be happy to help you work on a race schedule, training plan, or just general knowledge to improve your training.

Thanks Kevin, I will probably take you up on that. I need to focus on running now, which is my least favorite discipline, as I have the 10 mile LMCU Bridge Run and the GR Half coming up in the next few weeks. After that it will be 'offseason' as I don't have anything planned. My rough goal is to improve the bike this fall/winter. My running should be improved drastically just by losing weight. I might hit you up on FB later to see if you have any thoughts.

Club or group workouts are very motivating and soon you’ll start feeling like a triathlete, making you less likely to flake out.
