I'm doing a point to point swim this weekend. 2.1 miles in 52° water. My asthma is typically set off by chlorine so I always have an inhaler on the deck. But the cold air often triggers it as well. Cold fresh water is an unknown to me so I'm thinking it would be wise to pack an inhaler. But how? I've got a race belt that I could attach a fuel belt pocket to, very small but still bulky. Or I could tuck it in a hat? Anyone have any experience with this?

52 is cold, I've seen people have problems in water warmer than that.

I would suggest that you take 2 inhalers with you. I would think that one would do well tucked into your goggle strap behind your head. Fuel belt may work but I think it would be more accessible if you used rubber bands on your forearm.

TEST this in the pool first, this is not something you want to mess up in open water.

I tuck my inhaler into the arm of wet suit.. it is only wierd until you start swimming then I don't notice it at all. I do also have a back up on my bike, just in case I do lose it. Never take a full inhaler anywhere when racing! You know what I mean.

Hope everything works out.

My asthma is often worse in the water than any other setting.  I read a race report a couple years ago where the person placed his rescue inhaler in the sleeve of his wetsuit.  If you have a sleeveless suit you could put it just inside the front of the suit but you would want to be sure to test it out to make sure it wouldn't interfere with your stroke.

Sleeve of the wetsuit is the way to go. Like someone said earlier, you don't notice it when you get going. Plus, that's the best and easiest place to access it.

52 degrees is pretty cold - my breathing tightens up in cold weather. I haven't tested it in frigid waters - to scared and just not worth it for me.

Thanks for the advice. But I don't know what you mean. Maybe I'm not reading that right.

I have tucked in my swim cap at the rear base of my head.. At first it feels a bit weird, but I get used to it. In addition, I have quick access to it.

I first decided I was going to "do" a triathlon in 1994. It wasn't until 13 years later, in 2007 that I actually did. Why did it take me 13 years to get to the starting line? The swim!

Many people in the triathlon world think they need to just emulate Ian Thorpe to have a faster time, or have a similar stroke to Michael Phelps to cruise through the swim. Unfortunately...
