Subject: What's that odor? (HINT--it's me)

I was with a patient today and he said he smelled something like bleach. My thinking was that it was a cleaning product used to clean the exam table between patients. Wrong! It was me. I had done my swim this AM prior to coming to work. I have noticed the smell myself but never had anyone else comment on it. After my pre-work swims, I soap up and leave the soap/shampoo on for a bit in an attempt to rid myself of the chlorine odor. It obviously doesn't work. Any helpful tips?

I hate smelling like chlorine after a swim. Even worse is when you go running or biking later that day and are sweating chlorine, fricken nasty.

This past winter I was forced to deal with the chlorine issue, between the smell and the dry skin it was getting bad. My wife suggested lotion. Now I absolutely hate lotion with the passion of 1,000 burning suns, don't know why, just always have. She found some hemp based stuff that I could stand to have on me. Helped with the dry skin and got rid of the chlorine smell.

Shower before you swim.

When you hop into the pool without showering, your dry skin (and hair) soaks up lots of water.  When you shower first, you're letting your hair and skin absorb shower water rather than chlorinated pool water.

Yeah, that's pretty bad when other people notice your chlorine smell. I can't stand it, and the shower before doesn't seem to help me. Maybe I'll try lotion as someone else posted. yuk.

I always do to some degree. Today the shower temp was a little warmer so I took the best rinse that I have in awhile. Still stink.

From my experience, we can smell a LOT worse than chlorine. =)

I do the shower before, hot shower after and lotion, but nothing really gets that smell out until your next workout when you sweat it out.

They make swimming-specific shower gel that supposedly removes the chlorine stink, but I haven't tried it yet.

Definitely true.

Besides, if you are TRULY a triathlete you'd love to take this opportunity to apologize for your smell and then explain your workout of the day and talk about your upcoming race.

Lotion helps me, but I don't know that I've ever asked if I smell like chlorine, so maybe lotion doesn't work for me...

I had this issue last year, someone at work started to smell chlorine and got very worried. We use chlorine gas at work and have sensors and emergency shut off systems set up, but you can smell a problem before it get to a hazardous situation. Now when I'm on the floor and someone smells chlorine they ask if I've been swimming before freaking out.

I've been swimming so long I just don't notice much anymore.

My wife likes when I smell like chlorine. Better than any cologne.

I was a bit skeptical since regular body wash and shampoos don't really seem to do the trick. But it really works!
