I gather it's against the rules to play the "use the search" card.
I did search anyway. I almost always do.

Anyway...some timing chip comments in another thread reminded me of this:

Ever race I've done had the neoprene/hook and loop band with the chip.
A couple races ago, I heard someone in the transition the day before telling a friend they should safety pin it too, just in case since it was open water where retrieval would be near impossible. You know, "a friend of mine got hers kicked off during the swim"
So, of course, I start to obsess on that.

Wondering if y'all have any more anecdotal info on this?....beyond this one lady who heard from a friend who's cousin's sister in law said it happened to her former neighbor. I need more data points to alleviate my obsessiveness.

I see it being possible, but especially being that in open water, if it's a mass start....I'll wait for 2 minutes if I have to and let it clear up.

In my first tri my leg was sort of grabbed during the swim (incidental contact) and the neoprene band holding my timing chip twisted a bit. For the rest of the swim I was worried about it. It didn't help that the hook/loop material was old and wasn't very snug. Since then I've used a safety pin and you'll probably hear from others who even go so far as to wrap the chip with tape.

I've never heard of it happening from me, or the few tri friends I have in 3 years. That doesn't mean it doesn't/won't happen. But I wouldn't stress about it.

We use electric tape....but DON'T spray your leg with Pam (wetsuit swim) after you've applied the tape.  The Pam will wipe out the adhesive on the tape.  Don't ask me how I know this, I just do.

Tuesday April 5, 2005 marks the 1 year anniversary of my departure from my old life - a life consuming bags of fried pork rinds and way less activity than a person should be able to get away with.
