Just wondering why most people go for the smaller depth front wheel.

Depending on wind conditions the smaller wheel can make control the bike easier

With a disc rear, a 90 front is not a problem at all to control. With a 90 rear, you do feel the push with the 90 front.

I've been riding the deeper front in quite windy conditions without any issues at all. One drawback is weight, but that really only comes into play with longer and steeper climbs

How much do you weigh? I'm 220+ so I can't tell much a difference between a 60 and a 90. Buddy of mine is about 120 with rocks in her pockets so the deepest wheels she's comfortable with are Zipp 303s if there's any wind at all.

Weight is only a small part of the equation, core strength and bike handling skills are far more important. My wife is a lbs over a 100 and races 808's on her road bike and Jet 9 (650's, so proportionally a larger cross sectional area)) on her tri bike, never had a single issue in the windiest of races.

In addition to handling issues that put off many riders with deeper wheels (which can be addressed in a triathlon application with a deeper or disc rear), there is also the performance benefit to consider.

A 60mm wheel will generally stall at a high yaw angle than a 90mm wheel so in higher yaw conditions, a 60 may actually be faster than the 90. So a rider who expects to experience higher yaw angles (i.e. slower rider) may in fact be better off (or probably no slower) than with a deeper front. OTOH, a faster rider is probably better with the deeper front due to lower yaw angles.

+1,

although if you want to get technical about it, at low yaw (fast riders) there is usually less difference based on depth

When I was considering buying wheels (FLO), I was told or I read somewhere in their blog that the front 60 will be better if I ride under 24 mph and the front 90 will be faster when going 24 mph (I think it was 24 mph).

My back wheel needs to be trued up. It has a slight side-to-side wobble, and I feel at times like I'm going to lose control when I ride. Is this something that I should only trust to my LBS to do?

The wheels are my first area of concern and I have started to shop around. I find it nauseating to think of spending the same amount for wheels as my bike. Any help?

This article estimates how much time can be saved in sprint races by converting from stock aero wheels found on most tri bikes to more aero disk and composite spoked wheels.
