This may be a dumb question but I was looking to do my first ironman next year, and I was just wondering if you are allowed to use your cellphone (iphone) for music during the bike and run?

Nope, no headphones in any tri race. And WTC does not allow any communication devices so you can't have your phone with you even if you are not using it for music.

Thank you. That is really tough for me because that's all I use to keep myself occupied. No idea what I will do now!

I know where you are coming from. I thought the same thing until I started training without. Now it's no big deal. It's like cable tv in my head, though, lots to keep me entertained. YMMV.

Enjoy all the cheering from the spectators. It's better than any music you could listen to anyway

As others have said, it violates the rules.

But you ride with headphones on?!

You will be surprised come race day, music will be the furthest thing from your mind. I understand wanting music during training, but on race day it is not necessary at all. The experience, sights and sounds of race day are more than enough to keep you occupied.

My IM took over 14 hours and it all seems like a short blur now.

Well that is definitely good to hear. I recently made up my mind that I'm going to do IMLOU next year. I have my first sprint Sunday and looking forward to it! Thank you all. I'm sure I will have many questions to come in the future.

And yea I do ride with headphones however it's not loud I can still hear my surroundings.

With all due respect, if you're planning on doing triathlons then you really should find the time read the rules:

I only did road races before joining the triathlon world and I gave up my iPod for my training runs. It was definetly weird at first because I had so much more focus on my body/breathing and I'm sure it helped. I just did my first road race (7 miler) and it was great. I enjoyed the sideline music, talk from other runners, and cheers. It's nice to not have to worry about another gadget for my training and races. However, my iPod died at mile 9.5 in my HM last fall and boy did the last few miles feel even worse! you forget about your music before you know it!

Um if you look at the challenge Roth pictures, several of the pros were wearing headphones on the run. They are allowed for challenge events in Europe. So if you want to wear headphones, take a trip and chose a challenge event.

The only time I used headphones is when I am on my trainer, and even then I am bored :P

Roth is run under the DTU, so dont take those photos as permission to use headphones anywhere else. Any Challenge events in North America will be run by TriCan or USAT rules (depending on location.)
