The strength to train is a gift. The ability to race is a gift. Each day is a gift.

I thank God that he's not only been with me through some tough times, but that he's blessed me abundantly by instilling in me the desire to do my 1st tri and giving me the strength to do it.

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.

Congratulations! I'm coming up on 1 year since my last radiation and chemo on Aug 9th. CT scan a week later but all has been good so far. Was actually able to complete a sprint tri on Saturday.

Through all the trials of the treatments, God has been good and brought me through.

Here's to continuous positive reports for all!

I'm trying to recall, but It will be three years in December since the surgery and radiation.  Two more years to get the "all clear"...

Honestly, for ME, the only real lingering effect is that nagging "worry" that pops up occasionally.  I feel fine day to day and "cancer" doesn't cross my mind at all on most days BUT, it's that occasional odd pain, or bump, or something feeling "off" that I get a quick little panic attack before I breath and think it's just getting older or just a simple ache or pain like I had BEFORE the treatments.

I think it there will always be that "what if it's back" for the rest of my life when anything "odd" seems to be happening.  I had a  lingering ache in my neck for some reason last month and had the thinking "what if the cancer is back" when it really was just a pulled muscle or something that just went away after not talking for a couple days!  (wife was gone over the weekend so I had little choice to not talk!  Ended up being a good thing.)

Well this past weekend I finished my first tri. It was a relatively small race run by a local tri club. The weather was absolutely perfect and I felt good going into it. All the butterflys I had been feeling in the week leading up to this were gone. I had the realization that I had trained here twice before (bike, run but not swam), knew the course and if I treated it like "just another training day" I'd be fine. Being in that mental state was a HUGE help because I knew that being "pumped" or "amped" up that morning would sap too much energy.

Flipping to last chapter of this story, I finished 37th out of 130 people who did the sprint and came in 3rd place in my age group! I honestly don't think I could have pushed myself any harder without it adversely affecting my results. I had found the sweet spot somehow... Here's my race report:

That's awesome. Congrats. My tumor didn't come back... but they didn't expect it would. It was benign. Unfortunately, the MIL just got the news of cancer. It's stage 1, so hopefully it will be a "minor" event. Not fun for those that have it... not fun for those that love them. Cheers everyone.
