I'll be in town at this time visiting relatives, so, registered for the half iron individual.

I finished Branson, MO 70.3 twice, one Sprint last year and this year and an Oly this year. I have two more Oly's before Oct - one this month and the other in Sept.

I live in the Pacific NW. This will be my first time at Soma, and first time in Arizona. What pointers can you give about this course and the weather? Thanks!

Be prepared for it to be HOT on the run, and a lot of people complain about the many 180 turns on the bike, but it is a well run race. I have done it several times and may do the Quarterman this year since I think I may need to be in Tempe that weekend to drop my bike off for transport to IMFL. Good luck, and enjoy!

Thanks for the feedback. Hope you have an awesome Quarterman race!

Those 180 degree turns on the bike - so the key is to ride very conservatively and cautiously. Fwiw, I'll be using my road bike, and have several years experience mountain bike racing. Any steep hills on the bike and run?

It's pretty flat on bike. The only inclines are on Mill, Curry, and College. (check out Strava segments if you can) The tight turns can be annoying, but that way you don't relax too much from all the flat riding  The run course is basically level around the lake...tiny rollers not even near hill category.

It will be hot for you, but it's our time of year to start cooling off!

Hey, hot is relative... it feels cool compared to the peak summer heat.

Great race, well run, good support! I'm considering the Quarterman this year as well since I'm not in Half Iron shape and travel too much this fall.

Swim will be wetsuit legal, man made lake - floating start, gross, 0% visability, can't see your hand in front of your face, so practice sighting. Swim is easy rectangle though, typical of all Tempe races. Wetsuit strippers (at least every year I've done it)!!!

Bike is 3 loops (closed course) with LOTS of U-turns but relatively flat with a few inclines (nothing I'd call a real hill). The loops make it boring but makes pacing easier (at least for me).

again, good support on the bike.

Run is flat and usually HOT HOT HOT! But, usually in mid 90's , so compared to our summer, it isn't that bad. Hydrate a LOT the day before the race!

I've done this race for the past 3 years and it is always great! The loops on the bike are annoying and the run is pretty boring, but you are around the lake for the majority of it. Wish I could do the HIM this year, but again, I'm traveling too much!

Have fun and good luck!!

Calm swim in a man-made lake, flat bike and run course. Like everyone else has said, be prepared for hot. Hydrate. Could be cool by then, but more often than not, it is hot ---especially for those doing the 70.3. Great race. Very spectator friendly too

If you run a behind the saddle bottle don't use it for your nutrition bottle, you will lose it. Bike has one big bump at Mill that scatters everyone's BTS bottles. I'll be racing the quarterman.

They patched that part, so it's somewhat less of a bump now.

My issue is that I am currently deployed and training outside is proving difficult, especially on the bike. I have found a safe 10km running loop but I am struggling with the bike training.

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

This is not an easy task, especially for the “9-to-5er” with family. But you can do it – all without sacrificing your marriage, job or family.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
