Subject: First time with Aerobars - in a race
I'm traveling out of town for an Olympic distance Tri, and the bike shop I've rented from only has a bike with aerobars on it in my size. It's too late to change and every other shop in town is rented out.

So.... It's my second year of triathlons, I've done a few other Olympic distances (including NYC last weekend)... I've just never used aerobars before. Ever. On any ride.

I know the race course itself is virtually flat.

I'll be able to get to the bike for a few hours on Saturday night, and of course, on on the way to the race on Sunday morning. What's your best advice?

- M

They only thing I can suggest is stay on the bullhorns as much as possible. Aero can take getting used to, especially racing.

The bike is still a bike - no need to use the aero bars if you're not used to them. I upgraded to a cervelo p2 this spring and still rarely use my aero bars unless I'm in a race, just because the handling is difficult and I still need loads more practice to get more comfortable with them. The bike will be fine for you, just forget the aero bars are there. Don't be tempted to try them out in a race environment. Good luck!

Practice on Saturday night shifting and riding that bike which may not be as stable as you are used to with a road bike.

I would suggest not using the aerobar. Some people take to them quickly however you do not want to find this out in a race, its dangerous for you and everyone around you.

Ask the shop if they can put some bull horns on the bike ? you never know until you ask

My advice is to practice shifting as much as you can before the race. You can ride on the basebars, however unless the bike's equipped with Di2 you'll need to reach onto your aerobars to shift gears.

Is that how they described it-- "a bike with aerobars"? If it was a time trial or triathlon bike, I can't imagine that a bike shop would refer to it that way.

I wonder if it's just a roadie with aero clip ons.

Oh - that was my description - it's a full triathlon bike.

So far, I'm getting: stay on the bullhorns (never thought of that), figure out how to shift and brake the night before.

Next time bring your own bike.  It's easy....just takes a bit of planning.

For your question.....if you are a very experienced cyclist you can probably pull it off....if not, just be careful and if it feels too squirrely stay on the horns.

Everyone is different, it might not be a problem for you to ride it as intended.  I absolutely agree that it does handle differently, so get used to getting into and out of aero position because it will be a bit twitchy.  Good luck!

Personally I don't think the transition is that bad. Just make sure to get on the bullhorns in the turns and traffic. Other than that take advantage of the more aero position. The good news is for me the tri bike is much faster than my roadie.

Went well. Race was almost entirely on a closed freeway, and not too crowded. Fun to race with!

I am in the process of buying my first tri bike. Because of my size my fitter suggested buying a custom frame but then I have an infinite number of choices for components, wheels, aerobars, etc.
