Subject: Goals
I've done 13 triathlons since 2011 - 9 sprints between 2011-2012. Nothing in 2013.
and 3 sprints in 2014.
Just finished my first Olympic - NYC Triathlon.

About to do the Tugaloo Olympic.

Any tips on healing knees that are in pain about 12 hours after a run - can't walk and have to be iced. Is this normal for runs over 6 miles?
If so, don't see myself doing a half or full ironman.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Developing knee pains from a relative short run (under 6 miles) might indicate bad posture while running or (might be "and") using the wrong shoes. I used to develop knee pains when running 10+ miles and for me moving to Hoka-One-One shoes fixed the problem. So I keep two types of running shoes. Asics Gel Kayano for short(er) distances and the Hokas for the longer ones.

No, it is not normal. On long runs there may be some soreness that pops up 24-48 hours after a long run but crippling pain and needs icing? No. I would suggest that you consider seeing your Dr. and then maybe a sports medicine doctor.

It could be your shoes. It could be the surface where you run. (cement is the worst) It could be your gait. Too many factors to consider.

Good luck! Pain sucks.

To prevent a mental breakdown before you even get to the starting line, use the winter months to set goals, build your base, vary your workouts, cut back on training and throw in some variety.
