Subject: first tri - more race day questions :)
In two weeks, I will race my FIRST sprint tri REVERSE ( 5K run, 10 mi bike, 400 m POOL).

Questions:
1) The race is USAT sanctioned. Should I buy 1 day membership or full year?

2) According to the race website:

RUN
5-8 waves • depending upon the number of racers (last year , they had 300 participants)
5 minutes between each wave.
Wave 1 • 7:00am

Wave 2 • 7:05am

Wave 3 • 7:10am

Wave 4 • 7:15am

Wave 5 • 7:20am

Wave 6 • 7:25am

Wave 7 • 7:30am

-----
How do they determine the wave groups?

3) The swimming portion is serpentine, one direction. Should I just stop go under the rope? or Should I dive under the water to go to the next lane?

Thanks

Depends on how many races your going to do. 1 or 2, don't know if I'd bother with anything other than a 1 day. More than 2, probably worth the money for the real membership. There are some pretty decent store discounts that come with being a USAT member.

Generally, wave groups are based on age groups.

Never done a pool swim in a race but I'd just see what those in front of you are doing and how crowded the pool is when you get in. This you might have to play by ear.

I think if you save your recipt you can apply a one day membership to your annual. It takes 4 races for the membership to pay for itself vs one day memberships. I dontfind the discounts to ge better than what I can get elsewhere.

Hi! My first race had a serpentine pool swim. It was in the normal s/b/r order, so pool was first. We swam up and back in each lane (keep to the right), then under the lane line and repeat for 300 yds. We were told to touch the wall first. I have a swimming background and default to flip turns, but struggled a little doing them at the angle needed to get to the next lane - practice that first if you plan to try. I switched to open turns at that end after the first couple didn't work right for me.

The waves will likely be age groups, since the run is first.

Good luck, and have fun!!!!!

Thank you all for all your tips, I know that some of these questions will be covered during race orientation. But the more I know, the more I feel comfortable entering my first race.

For your swim question you'll want to check with the RD.  There are two local sprint series by me and they have different rules for their pool swims.  One RD allows flip turns in the current lane where you continue into the neighboring lane as part of your push off.  The other RD doesn't allow flip turns at all, and you must touch the wall in the neighboring lane before pushing off.  As far as I know, there's no specific ruling, it's a the discretion of the RD.

I will definitely ask this question during race orientation.

If you can I'd suggest finding out beforehand.  That way you can practice what the race will allow.  You'd be surprised how many people who are used to swimming in their lane only get a little flustered when they have to cross under the lap line and push off from the other side.  I spent a few hours in the pool when I had it to myself trying to make it as smooth as possible.

Phebes, I agree with the others about the USAT fee. Maybe do a 1 day for now then get a year if it seems you'll do 4 or more later and you can apply the fees you've paid.

Yes, she does the start waves based on age group.

The swim... she doesn't specify how you should push off, but I've found that this race gets a bit... crowded at the wall and you may have to touch, duck under the rope then find a spot to push off the next lane.  The one I did in Socorro this weekend I was able to push off as I went under but I've found that doesn't usually work in reverse tri's.
