I took everyone's advice and rode 75 miles this weekend instead of doing the marathon I had planned. I averaged about 16.5 mph while riding, but had a few restroom breaks, and another one at mile 50 to eat a bag of potato chips. Overall I averaged 14 mph. Total time was 530. Then I ran 6 miles after in about an hour. All in a fairly hot and sunny environment.

I just wanted to say thanks. I learned a lot during the ride, and used the first 56 miles to dial in nutrition for the first loop of the IM. It looks like 2 Power Bars, one Ensure, one banana, two bottles of water, and two bottles of Clip did the trick. Now I need to repeat this and maybe add a few items for the second 56 miles.

This weekend I am away and can't ride, so I am doing a long 4-5 hour trainer before we leave. I wish it could be outside! Thank you all for talking me into the ride, it was nice seeing a few miles at 17 mph, much more satisfying than another marathon!

Thanks sounds great to me. I averaged just under 17 mph for my 76 mile ride yesterday. I think you are doing well. I am not saying I am a strong biker but I know I can get through the distance and have something left on my legs. That run after is impressive! Wow, you fueled a lot and have me thinking maybe I don't fuel enough (mind you, I wasn't running after). Good luck with the rest of your training. You got this!

Not to discourage you (since 16.5 on hilly roads is great!) but just a warning that the wind is definitely a factor.  I know Cambridge is flat, but I was training all summer flat in the winds averaging 19-20 and last year we had 35 mph wind gusts and 20mph sustained.

The hill work WILL help you in the wind. I think you are doing fine--keep up with the 5-6 hour rides and do a preride of the course if you can. I find getting markers and visuals is a huge help.

You all have been so helpful, and so correct, about spending time on the bike. I have essentially ditched marathons to focus on the bike. It will be a stretch making the IM but I am at least getting better and learning. Last four long rides.

101 miles in 7:50
75 miles in 5:30 then 6 mile run in 1:00
5 hour trainer ride
82 miles in 5:30 then 5 mile run in 0:45

Next week is a 100 miler, then taper week, then IM. I should probably be riding a bit longer in the long rides but will put a max effort into the century ride.

In addition I am riding 3 other times per week for 1-2 hours. Man it's a lot but I am hopeful average out to 14-15 mph for the IM and barely make the cutoff time.

Smart use of your training hours with all that riding.
