Subject: Strength training/Abs- too late for IMFL
Hey all! I posted this is strength training but didn't get any replies so trying here. I have been following a pretty strict training plan for IMFL so cut out all of my lifting, toning, and ab workouts for the most part. Yes, I will still do abs for 10 minutes here and there to keep something, but not anything like before. I do feel like my back is a bit weaker than usual, and my legs hurt more toward the end of my long runs. The lifting has always kept me solid and strong. I realize the sheer volume of training could do all of the same things I am feeling as well.

Anyway, my kids will be back to school in 2 weeks and I will suddenly have about 2-3 extra hours of free time per day to workout. I am considering adding in just 1-2 short classes for strength training at the Y. Too much?? Too close to IMFL on November 1? Not necessary? I know many of you have said that strength training is NOT necessary, but I can tell I am not as strong as I'd like to be. Just not sure if I am taking too big of a risk for injury or
simply wasting precious time I could use on the bike or in the pool. I have always done Body Pump (Les Mills) so wondering if I could even do 1 class per week to get back into the lifting, too. I could reduce the weight and do higher reps.

Thanks in advance!

If it makes you feel better then go for it.  Don't expect strength training to improve your swimming, cycling and running though.  I'd be fine with it if it were in addition to your S/B/R training but not in lieu of your S/B/R training.

During my HIM a couple of weeks ago my back was really hurting. I worked so hard last year to get my back in shape because that was part of the issues that led to other injuries with my hips/knee/ankles according to the PT. I am not sure if it was because I was wearing my wetsuit and normally haven't been training in it (it sort of lifts your lower body up due to buoyancy) or if it was the hill climbs and wind on the bike. Regardless, my lower back hadn't hurt like that all season long. I had a pretty decent race over all (5:36 with some tough conditions and hillier course) but I just felt like something was missing. I was hoping the ab and back work may help alleviate some of that. I don't want to get hurt so may not do a lot with my arms. I had some nerve issues with swimming and lifting a couple of years ago so definitely don't need to agitate anything 2 months out from IMFL. My husband says I am crazy to change a thing since I am injury FREE right now. However, I just feel sort of weak in the core.

As said aboveif its in addition to your regular training and not instead of it I wouldn't see a problem. BP - especially the shorter 30 or 45min classes - would be a good option or if they hae the Les Mills CX Worx that'd be even better. Reduce the weight slightly for the leg tracks to save some energy for your regular workouts!

What about yoga?  Works core strength and increases flexibility.

Ease back into it. The problem with getting back to an exercise that you've taken some time off is that you really remember what you were doing before the lay off. It will be very temping to right back to what you were doing before. Try and ease back into it. Don't go all crazy the first few workouts.

What if I am really inflexible and haven't done yoga since 2007? Hypothetically (i have a friend...) ) Will this pose a bigger risk for injury?

Just don't go crazy doing difficult poses.

I like this DVD: http://www.amazon.com/Spinervals-Flexible-Warrior-1-0-Triathletes/dp/B000ODWPYM

The first workout (Energy) is what I use the most.
