Subject: new bike's front wheel noisy
Hi, I'm not sure I'm in the right forum but I think I am...

I just bought a new bike (my first ever road bike) this week. It's a Giant OCR 3.

My front wheel is a little bit noisy. It sounds as if the bearing is making some noisy. It's not squeaky, but it make a constant "hum".. I'm not sure how to describe it.

Should a wheel make any noise at all or should it be completely silent.

thanks
Butcher

If you hold the front up and spin the wheel, it should be silent. But if you're hearing humming while riding, it's probably just the tires on the road. Most likely nothing to worry about.

First perform the test mentioned above.  You should be able to see any wheel deformities.  A common cause of this noise is the wheel rubbing the brakes.  It happens to me all the time when I put my wheel on incorrectly.  It is amazing the diffrence in 3mm.  Finally, pay attention to the road surface.  It is asphault, concrete, something else?   A change in road conditions can cause noise.

Since the bike is new, your wheel bearings should not have worn out, it could be that you have a bad bearing from the factory, it happens.

Remove the wheel and give it a spin while holding it by the axle (not the quick release) if the bearing is bad, you will hear it, and probably feel it too. It will "catch" or feel a bit rough.

If you have a bad bearing on a new wheel, your bike shop should handle it as a warranty claim.
