Hi:

I'll be racing a half IM mid september.

Water will likely be around 18C/65F, weather will likely be sub 20C/68F - and that may even be optimistic - possibly rain all day and with fresh winds, I may be too pessimistic but those are the racing conditions I fear and like to be prepared for.

So what's your tips and advice for transition, race clothing, nutrition etc?

Thanks, Erik

Personally cold feet ruin my run. I'd get some cheapo neoprene bike shoe toe covers. If you do get overly warm on the bike, only takes a few seconds while still biking to remove them.

Sounds like warm to me but I am also used to much much colder....

Do you usually race and train in much warmer weather?

If it is very cold I put something over on the bike, a windbreaker or so and also toe covers which was mentioned. Arm warmers are also an option and can be easily removed and stored if no longer needed.

A lot of people here also race with compression calf guards mostly to have some more clothes on.

But it all depends on what you are used to....

Aren't those summer like conditions for a Dane? Agree on the feet, toe covers if you got 'em. Anything over 60 deg F with or without wind I'm good with standard kit. I live in Kansas so I'm used to very windy conditions.

Yeah, I just moved back from Spain a few months ago and had completely forgotten just how sh**tty Danish weather can be. This friday I was out riding wearing long sleeve jersey, today it's been raining 8 hours straight. Back in May at the Copenhagen Marathon, what was expected to become a warm day ended in heavy rain for those finishing slower than 3:30 and lots had to be treated for hypothermia.

It's the combination of cold - or cool - weather, wind and rain that worries me, in particular the rain. I plan to pack a dry towel and socks for both T1 and T2. I consider wearing long sleeve jersey for the ride, and pack a rain-jersey too. Maybe a dry shirt for the run. Toe covers sounds like a good idea. I guess I won't PR in transition :P

”Dang! That water’s cold!” immediately hit me. In these first few seconds, my triathlon goal sunk quicker than my legs and torso had. I now knew this was going to be a lot harder than I imagined.

Being lean isn't all wine and roses. The reduction in body fat has, unfortunately, also made me a slower swimmer. I have also become a real wimp in cold of any kind.

Training in the cold can be effective and fun with some planning. Overall, prepare for the environment, stay hydrated and dry, listen to your body and have a great safe cold weather outing.
