Hey everyone! I'm going to be in the Durham area for a little over a month. I was wondering if you guys knew of any popular riding areas around there, and especially group rides. I was also wondering if there are any pools that I can go to without a membership. An amazing bonus would be if they have childcare!

A lot is going to depend on where you are located in Durham.  Near Chapel Hill?  Near North Raleigh?  You might want to check out the Raleigh Gyros (http://raleighgyros.com/) or the Tarwheels (http://tarwheels.org/) as a starting point.

ETA: I should also have mention the Inside-Out rides.  I'm not sure how convenient either the Cary or Raleigh location will be but if you are looking for something more tri specific, it's worth a shot -- http://local.insideoutsports.com/

Originally posted by eppie There are many appropriate lifeguard option pools in Durham. As for childcare; lifeguard options - a silly/stupid inquiry, to say the least. Parents are responsible for keeping their minor children safe.

I think that you misread the OP's question.  The OP asked about childcare.  Places like Lifetime and the Y often have childcare available on site.

Yes this ^. My la fitness in Miami has a daycare area so I can swim while they watch the kids for me :D. I'm not 100% on location since my wife set it up, but I know I'll be about 10 minutes away from the Duke University Hospital. Thanks for the info!

I got about a minute into it and, despite bracing myself against it for months, I panicked. I could not get my breath. I said, "I can't do this, I can't do this."

I went into the pool area (as this was a pool swim) and got body marked. That's when it hit me that I was there to race - this was not a clinic.

The triathletes really inspired me. I watched them in awe as childlike thoughts went through my head like, "I want to do that!" But then reality set in. “Who are you kidding?
