Pre-race routine:

I've had a hard time putting this report together. So disappointed that I got sick with a crushing sinus infection the week of the race. The 1000 mile trip to Milwaukee with my bike and 4 other bikes plus gear was uneventful. Got to hang out with some team mates and BT friends in Milwaukee and that is always fun. I was nowhere near 100% when Sunday morning rolled around but it was time to give it what I had.
Event warmup:

Ran a bit and did some stretching. Swam a few hundred yards before our wave went off.
Swim
  • 12m 30s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 40s / 100 meters
Comments:

I didn't really push this. Alot of contact in the first 200 yards or so then things eased up a little.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder but I knew the race would be a struggle so just wanted to get going and get to the bike
Transition 1
  • 02m 40s
Comments:

Long run from swim exit to transition. Everything seemed to go smoothly.
Bike
  • 32m 48s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 22.68 mile/hr
Comments:

Started off with decent power then there was a steady decline. No legs and having trouble breathing. I tried to maintain consistent power as I knew I would need a good bike split but just couldn't do it. In my last 3 sprints my power has been 253-255 watts on the bike. At this race I was 225.....so likley 1.5-2 minutes slower than when healthy.
What would you do differently?:

Be healthy heading into the race. I kept telling myself I could quit after the bike so I could get through it.
Transition 2
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

A pretty decent T2
Run
  • 20m 39s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

First two miles were both at 6:45. Pushed the last mile. Got passed by 1 guy in my AG with 100 yards to go and passed another.
What would you do differently?:

I gave it everything I had on that day. So, I'm not disappointed with my effort level...just the circumstances
Post race
Warm down:

Visited with friends and team mates. Got something to eat then packed up transition. Back to the hotel to clean up and then hit the road.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Getting sick the week of my "A" race was a real bummer. I was actually 30 seconds faster than 2013 but nowhere near where I have been racing this year. Looking at results of other guys in my AG that I have raced against this year I feel confident I would have been 1.5-2.5 minutes faster if healthy. Really frustrating as I was 25 seconds out of 25th and a slot for 2015 AG World Championships in Chicago. Slim chance for a roll down but not likely.

I am pleased with my effort level under the circumstances at the race. This is not meant to come across as negative or "sour grapes" but it is frustrating. Guess I would feel the same if I had a flat.

It was still a fun weekend and great to see some of the guys on my team qualify.

Event comments:

USAT put on a great weekend. Level of competition was way beyond what I have ever seen at a race. Strongly considering going back to Milwaukee for a 3rd year. Feel like I have a good race in me on that course.

Great effort for being under the weather. Frustrating for sure as you easily are a few minutes faster when healthy, especially on that fast bike course.

You are still a rock star in my book. Way to push through despite feeling crummy.

I think I would like to try this event next year. Any chance you are going back?
