Pre-race routine:

The day started off not so good - I should have known that there was worse stuff to come.

Got there very early - I thought everyone had to check in by 8 am even though the try-a-tri didn't start until 11. Went on a ride to the gas station as everyone i asked didn't have a bike pump, and the nozzle didn't fit, which proceeded to release all the air from my tires. So, my friend went back to get the car, and we found a lovely gentleman with a bike pump who not only let us borrow the bike pump, but pumped up both my tires for me - my hero. We then watched the Sprint finish, tested the water and rode our bikes a little, and set up transition.
Event warmup:

Other than our little bike adventure, we got in the water early just to get used to the water.
Swim
  • 15m 3s
  • 375 meters
  • 04m 01s / 100 meters
Comments:

Ha. So, I get in the water (staying at the back of my pack on purpose.) I'm doing this head up front crawl and then try to put my head in the water and do a proper front crawl. I bring my head up to catch my breath and instead catch a wave and inhale a big gulp of water. I start to breast stroke to catch my breath and the guy on the surf board at the other end of the course books it towards me to make sure I wasn't dying. How tempted I was in that moment to get out. But alas, I was doing this, because if I could finish the swim I could finish this thing. The next 15 minutes are between head up front crawl, and breast stroke and trying to breathe. I was panicking. Then the pack behind us started to catch up (they were lovely - heard things like "keep going", "you're almost there" and "You're doing great".)

I finished with the majority of the second pack, and struggled to get my center of gravity as I ran to the bike
What would you do differently?:

Hmmm...Not think? Start with a different pack? Oh, and definately where a wetsuit
Transition 1
  • 03m 25s
Comments:

I have nothing to compare this to, but i think this was pretty good. I didn't rush (still trying to recover from the swim) and dried my feet off, threw on my socks and was off.
What would you do differently?:

I want to get a tri suit. So easy! Oh and my helmet I bought the day before and it was a little tight so maybe getting it fitted before I get on the bike...
Bike
  • 36m 12s
  • 10 kms
  • 16.57 km/hr
Comments:

SO. I like the uphills. I kicked butt at the uphills. But then I rode my brakes on the downhills. It was really really scary. I was passing people on uphills they were passing me on downhills. A little strange.
What would you do differently?:

I see a training opportunity would be to practice going downhills, but yesterday i would not do anything differently
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

This was fun. I think I did a pretty good job here. Not having clippy pedals really helped.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing?
Run
  • 18m 48s
  • 2.5 kms
  • 07m 31s  min/km
Comments:

I was still coughing from earlier and had an awful side stitch, couldn't breathe. A little disappointed because run is my strongest event. There was no music allowed which was really tough, I kept getting into my head.
What would you do differently?:

Get more comfortable with pain and push harder because I had a little tiny bit left at the end, and figuring out some sort of mantra, being in the moment, not thinking about things hurting. Also, not almost drowning in the swim might help my breathing.
Post race
Warm down:

Warm down? How about sit down. Haha I walked to the food tent, grabbed my stuff and went to rack my bike on the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training but not keeping my training log updated - there's no way for me to analyze where I went wrong and what i didn't do.

Event comments:

Bring on the next race!

CONGRATULATIONS, TRIATHLETE!!!

Way to persevere through a tough swim, be a hill beast on the bike, and work it on the run! Great finish!

Super job, Emily!!  You pushed through your panic and survived a really rough swim.  LOVE that you kicked butt on the uphills - that's awesome!  Once you get comfortable with the downhills, you'll be a seriously scary cyclist, plus zooming down hills is SO much fun.  Now that you know what to expect, you can plan more for next time.  Yay, you're officially a triathlete!!!

Good job sticking with it! So much of doing tris is mental and not letting things get to you to shake your focus. Looks like you've got that part down

Yeah, I almost grabbed a kayak on my first race also.  It gets easier from here!

Nice work, tough girl!  Tough mentally and tough physically, recovering from your swim debacle to doing great on the bike (I'm jealous of your uphill skills!) and finding ways to cope on the run without the music you are accustomed to.  It sounds like you learned a lot in this race, then next one will surely go better still!  Congrats!

Reminds me of my 1st. EVERYONE panics the 1st time. Well done for sticking at it. You've also taken some great things to work on away from this race, and identified your strong points. Work on those now and chip away at that time on the next one. Congratulations.

GREAT JOB EMILY!

Well done, you have done the headrest bit, I think that first open water swim is always a killer. Also if you have up hill mastered on your bike then with some practice you will smash the downhills.

My right knee has a pain in the front, just below the kneecap. I walked 24 miles of IM Louisville. No pain while walking but it started immediately when trying to run.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

So here I was, a hard-working, respectable, just-turned-forty-six-year-old, who never considered herself athletic, lining up in my swim cap and goggles for my first triathlon.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.

What to wear under the wetsuit? What to wear for the bike and the run? Good thing someone invented the wonderful trisuit, to which we’ve become accustomed. It’s supposed to make our lives so simple.

Can anyone think of a better way to spend Labour Day weekend than doing your first tri? Ok, maybe doing your 2nd, 3rd...50th tri...but you get my point. :)
