North Garden, Virginia
United States
Overcast
Total Time = 2h 02m 23s
Overall Rank = 13/43
Age Group = 40-44M
Age Group Rank = 3/5
Pre-race routine:

Typical orange juice and clif bar on drive to site. Checked in and then set up transition.
Event warmup:

Ran for about 10 minutes on the run course. Swam for about 5 minutes in the lake before the start.
Swim
  • 18m 7s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 25s / 100 meters
Comments:

I've put in much more time on my swimming and hoped to have a fast swim. I felt more comfortable than in past swims, just not much faster. I guess the swim feeling easier with the same time is an improvement.
Transition 1
  • 00m 48s
Comments:

Fastest T1 by 9 seconds.
Bike
  • 1h 16m 36s
  • 8.5 miles
  • 6.66 mile/hr
Comments:

Wow, that was hard! I've not done nearly enough mountain biking of late, but even if I had, I would not have been prepared for the toughness of this course. Lots of big roots and rocks on uphill sections were very difficult.
What would you do differently?:

Train more on mountain bike; buy a 29er; get full suspension
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Recover time. Much slower than my typical T2, but I was just trying to recover from the bike.
Run
  • 25m 34s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

Passed several people on the run, so I was feeling pretty good. Finished first in my age group, so can't complain. Enjoyed the run and felt I put in about the best time I could. I had been having some calf and hamstring pain on some runs, but had none of that.
Post race
Warm down:

Gatorade, water, talking with family. Used outdoor shower and then changed in locker room. Family brought a picnic and we ate a wonderful meal together.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Biking.

Event comments:

It was a fun race, but extremely difficult. If I do it again, it will be on a different bike.

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

Immediately I felt attracted by the challenge. I have done plenty of biking this summer and a new motivation, particularly toward the end of the summer, was what I needed.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

If you haven’t done any bricks yet, this isn’t the time to start piling them on, but here are some examples you could do in the lead up to your race.

My 1st triathlon, Xterra and the mess I made of myself. This wasn’t your regular triathlon, it was off-road.

The XTERRA off-road triathlons consist of a lake swim, a mountain bike trail ride, and a trail run. I decided to try the AZ Xtreme Desert XTERRA Tri as my 1st off-road triathlon, and my 3rd tri ever.
