Subject: IRONMAN finisher gear " NO-NO"?

Just wanted to run this by the group.

As the footnote says below I had done IMLP in 2013 and finished For a few reasons, one being that I did not buy one the day after the race and then a quick sellout etc I never got a finishers jacket.   In short I saw someone looking to unload a never used jacket from 2013 in my size, but it was already bought by someone else.  Their opinion was " hey why don't you buy this years jacket 2014, since you have completed one?"........Not saying it didn't cross my mind but I would feel slightly weird since it says 2014 finisher and not 2013 though it is a nice jacket.........I am leaning towards not doing it but figured I would see what others think.

What would you do? The same as me? or just get the jacket?

The only person it should bother is you. You should just email IM and see if they have any leftover gear they'd sell ya.

Thanks , I had contacted them months ago and they did not have any....they has 1 small for a while but no intentions of getting anymore.

Your right, probably would only be an issue with me. I guess if someone asked , saying NO but I did in 2013 it not the same awkward moment that some people may feel about the age old branded vs non-branded argument.

Triathletes think way too much about what other people think of them...

Congrats on your IM finish last year.  If you want the jacket...get it.

I see no problem with getting the jacket. the point is, you did it, you are a finisher, nobody is going to say ... ohh, but you did it a different year so it doesn't count. get the jacket. if the year really bothers you, you can take the thread for the year off, or even pay someone to change the 4 to a 3.

I didn't buy the IMCdA Finisher's jacket in 2009.

How many times would I wear a $200 white finisher's jacket?  I'm sure if I'd bought it, I'd wear it to the first club social after the race whether it was 92°F or not.  After that?  Maybe twice more to club activities, but it isn't something I'd put on to go to a local 5K (too pretentious for me), on a date (not looking for someone only impressed by my finisher jacket), training (it was WHITE), or for yardwork around the house (it was W.H.I.T.E.)  It would disintegrate in the back of my closet.

How different were the conditions between the two years?  A few years back, IMWI was 95°F one year and 52°F the next year.  Those would be dramatically different experiences represented only by the number on the gear.

A few years back, I was browsing shops in Kona and saw some Ironman jerseys for sale.  I'd done an IM, but not Kona.  How would I feel having people ask me questions about that race?  Yea...I left it on the rack for someone else to buy.

I guess if you really want a finisher jacket, sign up and race again and get to the expo before they sell out of your size.

It wouldn't bother me because of what other people thought, but it would still bother me. Kind of like the little scratch on the roof of your mouth.

I'm with Zed - there's no problem if there's no problem for you.  However, i'd always be on edge that someone would ask about it (even though that is highly unlikely) - i have a IMWC visor because we went and spectated in 2010. I figured it was kind of like getting your favourite team's hat but i still kind of feel like a poser wearing it - even though almost no one knows or cares. And I did love going to see it!

That said, I love my IM finisher gear. I wear it proudly and no one ever asks - but i definitely definitely finished that year. Like Left said, too - care way too much ...

I personally wouldn't wear a jacket from a different year than the IM I completed.

But that is just me and it wouldn't bother me if someone decided different for themselves.

Before my first IM, NAS (back when WTC licensed 140.6 to NAS) was changing vendor of clothing so they were clearing things out at 75%+ off. I bought a bunch of items some were finisher gear and others just IMLP stuff. I put them in my closet except the socks, then after I finished my first IM, I was super pleased that I got such great deals. I have the jacket from a previous year. It doesn't have a year but if someone that did it recognized it and asked, I would not having an issue saying no I did it in 2008.

Seems that you care since you ask but I wouldn't worry about it.

I just completed my first at IMMT. Went to the expo the next morning and about 200 people in line in front of me. I wanted a jacket and thought I might not get one. Lucky for me, they mis-printed the jackets and did not put the sponsor logo on so they were not selling any the morning after. THey had a few of them for us to try on and everyone got a form to fill out and we all paid for them and they should be shipped October 1.

While in the shop, I did notice a huge circular rack that had IMMT 2013 Finishers jackets for sale at half off. I did see some people buying them. If you live close to LP, maybe go up there next year and see if they have any? Somehow, I feel like IM always has a few extra leftover when it comes to race day expo. If not, keep emailing IM about it. They might not have any leftover but I am sure they can put you in touch with the manufacturer of the jacket and I would assume that they use the same one every year and they probably keep the design and prints on file so maybe they can make one for you? Just a thought

Personally I wouldn't do it.  I've always been superstitious about not wearing any race gear unless I actually finished a race and 'earned it'.  Think I would feel like a poser unless I had actually done the race.

Part of my bias is due to the fact that I'm not exactly built like a pro triathlete/runner and I've actually had people (generally non-athletes) challenge me when I've worn gear from races that I did complete.  Stuff like: "You must have been a part of a relay team for that half marathon, you really didn't run it all, did you?"  or "Did you actually finish that triathlon?"  If I have to occasionally defend the fact that I actually completed a race, then I definitely wouldn't want to put myself in a position where I would have to explain that I was wearing gear from a race I didn't do.

Just my perspective.

If you feel OK with it, then that's your deal.  Not here to judge.

Mark

Simple Solution that I'm surprised no one said and if that did I missed it so sorry,

Buy the 2014 Jacket that you like. Take it to a print / screen shop, have them remove the 2014 stitching and replace it with 2013 stitching in the same style and color thread. Problem solved, no misrepresentation for you to worry about, and you have your finishers jacket. If it's not stitched you still can likely have a shop remove and replace the print, and I don't think either would cost you more than $25 or so. Just a thought

This year's jacket has the year printed along the pocket, also.

You asked, so I'll chime in. You should by the jacket and sew an asterisk next to the year. Anyone who asks, you can tell them "I didn't bike through a freak arctic storm, but at least I swam the full distance". Just kidding, buy the jacket, or buy some good scotch and you can drink it while wearing the finisher hat they gave you for "free" in 2013.

Thanks for insight and humor .

I think if I decide to get a IM jacket it will be a generic one or go with my original thought of not getting it.

I do not get into "my race had more rain, or my race had more heat" etc argument but I think at the end of the day if it says 2014 finisher I won't feel right,

I not worth it to get it adjusted/modified

thanks

Why not buy a jacket you like? Find somebody with a monogram machine and stitch whatever you want on it.

given that you ARE an IM finisher- I say it's a 'go' by my personal standards.  Now- if you had never finished IMLP- that would be a different story.

I would not purchase finisher gear of a race I didn't finish. And I didn't have to think about it much at all.

I finished IMCDA in 2013 - at 9am the next morning there where no more finishers jackets in my size.  I kept checking the IM website for a few months to see if they had anymore in stock.  All of the sudden, about six months later I get an email saying "last chance, 50% off IMCDA finisher jackets - only three left in my size".  I whipped out my credit card and ordered... only to notice the confirmation said "your order has been received for 2012 IMCDA finisher jacket".

I wear it... nobody knows or cares what year I did it - the important part is it's a "Finishers Jacket".

Meh... if you want the jacket, get the jacket.  You did do the race just not the year... no big deal IMHO.

That sucks, I did IMCDA this year and they had a whole rack of 2013 jackets the day after the race.

More than any other factor – including distances in other sports, weight, height – time on bike proved important for faster performance.
