I own a Rudy Wingspan which has some decent ventilation openings, but it is obviously not as ventilated and cool as my regular road helmet.  For the Ironman distance, at what temperature do you begin considering NOT using the aero helmet?  For me and my analysis, it seems like a sunny high of anything in the 80's is going to warrant me using the road helmet to stay cool instead of the aero option.  So what is your cutoff temp or do you subscribe to the "go aero or go home" philosophy even if it's 100 degrees?

I have raced a HIM on a day with high temps >100. It was probably in the 90's during the bike and I honestly had no issue whatsoever with the aero helmet.

I have a Giro Advantage 2 and honestly, it is every bit as comfy at high temps as my Giro road helmet. I'd wear it for training if I didn't look like I was riding around with a huge sperm on my head.

I only rode with my Lazer once (during my HIM) and I didn't notice it at all. The temps were in the lower 80's but I no longer fear the heat using this anymore. I also ride and run with a Halo now (new this year) and I got really worried about wearing that too but they both have been awesome. I had the same question in my head that you're asking but I don't think I'll ever not use my aero helmet on race day. The speed gained from it was just too nice and I can always pour water in the water vent hole if I need to.

I also have a Giro Advantage 2.  I live in FL and have never had a problem wearing it in heat in the 90's, but the again I may just be acclimatized to it since I ride in the heat all the time.  That's with the caveat that I'd never worn it for an IM distance race.

Have you considered doing some trial runs?

Mark

The Wingspan with the front vent completely open and the tail cover removed is pretty darn well vented. I've raced that in hot/humid conditions without any problems at all. And I can't stand heat/humidity! I start to suffer once we hit the low 80's.
