Reading Dixon's The Well Built Triathlete. He talks about how triathletes must take in enough cals to be able to train without getting specific. At 5'1" and working on sprint distances do I need more than my weight loss 1200 plus enough to compensate for cals used in training that specific day? How much reserves do I need other than my remaining 10 lbs of fat?
Is he even talking about someone like me or only his IM trainees?

you can calculate base calories needed for losing weight, maintaining, working out once a day, twice a day etc - if you go too low on calories, your body may not be burning them, but storing, so you could be better off upping your calorie intake.

at 5'3" and an athletic 144 - my base for maintaining is 1700cal a day, for workout days, I do 2000-2500 depending on what I am doing - if I am doing a really long day (5+ hours) - then it may be closer to 2800

I've found by doing that, I've actually slimmed down in the last 8 months, not lost a lot of weigh, but gone from more fat to muscle
