Subject: 9 weeks out from IMFL- taper for Olympic AT ALL?
Hey all! I just got a free registration for the age-group race at the Hy-Vee 5150 event. I qualified for Nationals but opted out due to IM training several months ago. Then, this registration fell in my lap this week! My friend qualified for 5150 and had a charity registration that was going to waste!
I was planning to do my regular training up until about Wednesday of next week and then possibly start easing back and doing no more than a 1:40 long run. I can possibly cram in my long bike and run early in the week and a long swim by Wednesday evening. Thoughts? I hate to not taper at all, as this is in my hometown and I don't want my confidence and morale to be too low after. Does that makes sense??

Thanks.

I don't know if IMFL is your first full, if so...I personally wouldn't be racing anything 9 weeks out.
But that's me, being conservative and sticking to my IM plan. I'm training for a full mid-Oct, and just blew off a race this past weekend.

Do you plan on racing the Oly or just having fun ?

Unless you are really good at recovering / keeping the Oly to a reasonable "training" level, you might not be ready to get the long bike/run in early in the following week. I just don't think I would be ready.

As for the taper question, I wouldn't taper for this Oly except maybe a few days rest prior..

I'd make the week before the Olympic a recovery week, and cut your volume in half. 9 weeks is still a long time yet.

i'd do week before/week after a recovery week - its not really a long enough race to make it a long training day - so that's hard...do it for fun maybe

Race the oly.  All out.  It's a hard training session (and some fun racing).  No tapering.  Take an easier day the day or two before and day after race, if you like/need, but at 9 weeks you should really be ramping up the final build for your IM so nothing more than that.

Thanks. I did a HIM a few weeks ago so feel decent about where I am. I do need more brick training but have heard so many mixed reviews on really long bricks. I do lots of run/bike, run/swim, and bike/run combos but none of them are super long (yet). I think I will do a 4 hour bike ride on Sunday of next week, brick on Tues and swim, swim only Wed, run only Thurs and then easy swim and fitness class Friday. I may spin easy on Sat but will see how I feel. Race Sunday will certainly not be close to a PR. Haven't been doing any of my runs under 8 min pace so guessing run and bike will be mediocre. Hoping for under 2:50. . Appreciate the feedback! Time is going by so fast. My plan actually has me doing a HIM in September but I cannot locate one.

You are better off doing the oly than the half.

Agreed. I did an Oly on July 27th and I am doing IM Barcelona on October 5th. The Oly was on Sunday and it was the last 2 hours of a 20 hour training week (I did a 90 mile bike ride the day before). I took it as a hard session and t went pretty well. The following week was a recovery week (planned) though.

I'm tapering this week for my first sprint triathlon. I'm thinking I may need to adjust my calorie intake for the decreased workout load? How do I make sure I am properly fueled for the race?
