Gilford, New Hampshire
United States
World Triathlon Corporation
72F / 22C
Overcast
Total Time = 4h 35m 20s
Overall Rank = 56/2277
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 8/257
Pre-race routine:

Had to drive from Jackson, NH, so I was on the road around 3:50.
Event warmup:

Short swim while waiting for my wave (14th one) to go off.
Swim
  • 33m 7s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was hoping to be closer to 30 min - just need more consistency, and I haven't had that this season.
Transition 1
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

Suit a little stuck, but overall ok
Bike
  • 2h 22m 7s
  • 56 miles
  • 23.64 mile/hr
Comments:

Wattage was lower than I expected - was hoping to be around 280 watts, but came in around 260. Had also hoped for a time in the 2:17-2:18 range, and that probably would have happened if I had a better ride. Overall, decent for the training I've done this year, which is a far cry from what fitness I had last year.
What would you do differently?:

More training - sickness, travel, injuries, and moving have derailed things quite a bit this year.
Transition 2
  • 01m 20s
Run
  • 1h 36m 47s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

I honestly had no clue how this would go. My long run since Boston in April was one hour, and my IT band hurt a bit after that run. Surprisingly, the IT band felt ok - I think the bike helped stretch things out and warm up my legs.

This is about 8-10 min off where I feel I can run, but with only a little over six weeks of running in the last three months, I'll take it.
What would you do differently?:

Not get injured!
Post race
Event comments:

Nice place for a race. I'd like to do Timberman again, but it falls on the weekend of IMMT next year. Maybe I'll do it in 2016.

That was a very solid race with your issues this year. Way to go!

I just finished the NYC marathon on Sunday and I think I'm going to venture into triathlons. I am doing an Olympic distance and I want to do a 70.3 next year too. Any advice?

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.
