In my never ending search to do neat stuff, I am now looking at trying to ceramic coat an old cassette. (Something like the guys at Atomic do.)

Anybody ever done it before? I assume not all are created equal and a can of header paint won't do the job. Thoughts?

Maybe I'll just try it... cassette was going in the trash anyways.

Ceramic coating is typically a PVD (physical vapor deposition) process…. which can't be done at home unless you have a reactor chamber in your living room.

…. and knowing you, you might have one.

Ceramic coatings are typically either wet sprayed or plasma sprayed. I'm not familiar with it being done via vacuum/PVD but I guess its possible. Either way, any of the plasma approaches are out of the question for DIY. Although wet is 'possible" I wouldn't recommend it. You're much better off sending it out to someone that specializing in bike parts like this. I know they're currently doing frames, gears and assorted components.

surely a used $100k plasma sprayer machine thing is a welcome and useful addition to any kitchen.

Ahh well I'll just go back to playing with carbon fiber. At least it's only likely to kill me from the inside.
