I lived most of life in tropical islands, so I get cold easily.

When I did my first tri last Saturday, it was in the 60's. I was cold, thank goodness I brought long sleeves shirt. I also kept my sprained leg warm by using a brace.

I want to do my second sprint tri in November or December this year:

1) What is the best tops and tri shorts/leggins to keep me warm?

2) The swimming course will be outdoors (pool) , is there a swimming gear that could keep me warm?

3) If the course starts with a swim, how do you keep yourself warm during the bike course after the swim?

Thank you.

I get cold easy also. For the swim, if the water is cold, a full wetsuit, swim cap and even latex gloves will help a LOT. I recently did a Tri that had a pool swim, so the water was plenty warm. However, it was a dreary and rather cool day outside. So, I just wore my reg tri shorts and sleeveless top for the swim, then pulled a long sleeve rash guard over the top in T1. If it would have been colder I would have added zip up cycling leg warmers as well. You also can add a hat under your helmet and that will make a big difference. Gloves of course if needed. Lots of options. I think you want layer(s) for the bike that you can peel off in T2 if you're getting warmed up by run time.

I don't care how cold you get, unless the temp is well below the 60s, you do not put anything else on your legs--too much bother for too little comfort.  They will warm up into your ride.  You can use a long sleeve or jacket to put on your top, or use arm warmers, for the bike (again, in the 60s, I simply wouldn't bother but that's personal preference).  The only swimming 'gear' that will keep you warm is a wetsuit.  If they are allowed, wear one.  Accept that you will be chilly when you start the bike regardless of what you put on, since you will be wet.  By the run, you will happy it is cool.

A wetsuit in a pool?

My first tri started with an indoor swim in the pool in March-- I will do an olympic at the same event next year. I was worried about my legs being cold, so I put on running tights in transition, but I don't know if I really needed them.

If it's outdoors and water is cold, sure.  As a bonus, you'll be faster.  If it's indoors/heated, then there's no real benefit (other than speed).  But OP seemed to be concerned about keeping warm in the water.  So, yes, wetsuit in a pool.

If it is much colder, then covering legs (and other body parts like hands, feet, head etc.) may be necessary on the bike.  I've been in races where people had to abandon because they got too cold.  But conditions were temps in the low-mid 40s and rain.

I found race reports of the triathlon I'm planning to race. One participant said that the temp was in the 20s. Last year, another lady had frost bite and forgot her gloves. Luckily, a friend found her on the bike course and handed her gloves. She also said that there was sheet of ice on the bike seat and had to shift several times to unfroze the shifter.

I'll definitely consider find the right gear for winter races.

UBC doesn't have anything in November and I'm pretty sure Phebes is not in Canada.

Was it really 20 degrees Fahrenheit? You couldn't pay me enough to do a triathlon in that cold weather. Frostbite? Seriously- wait till spring or summer.

The UBC tri in March is the one I've done and it was about 50F or 10C one year- that would have been my limit. It's not usually much colder here in March. When I did it it was a bit warmer.

One slight problem. I don't know how to swim at all. When I say 'at all', I don't even dog paddle because I am scared to death of water. But I am going to do this.

My thanks to the triathlete community for being there when I need you. That’s the beautiful thing about triathletes. None of us are all right, and no one expects anyone else to be.
