I have a trivial question that I am curious about. I have my first Tri coming up on Labor Day. I have large tattoos that cover both upper arms, How will they handle my markings? Lower arms? Different color than black? Anyone else have tattoos that will get in the way of markings?

it depends on who is doing the body marking - when i've done races in situations like yours, I try to put the number either lower on the arm, or in larger digits so it can be seen

Just skip body marking.  It's a stupid tradition that race directors for some reason hold onto.  There's no reason for it and no rule enforcing it.  I haven't been body marked in over four years after I had marker bleed ruin a $250 trisuit.

There's races I do that still require it. Won't let you in transition on race day with out it. It's a bit of a PITA because they have mandatory Saturday bike drop off and registration. I don't want to walk around all day Saturday with markings on my arm and leg so have to "convince" them I'll do it myself in the am. It's not for security either, they give out wrist bands for the transition area.

First off - ENJOY YOUR FIRST RACE!!! Secondly, I have a large tattoo on my upper left arm and I just have the body markers write over it. Yes, bigger races sometimes use the temporary tats but most don't.

Thanks everyone. So when I get to the marking, which ever works, lower arm or big enough on the upper arm, the volunteers should know whats best and we will go with it.

Then how else will they know who to give the arms back to after the gator or shark chomped them off?
