With a ful-time city job, and a family, it looks like the max hours I can put into training = 8-10 hrs a week. fitting any more training in would require an act of God.

But the schedule below works with my other commitments. Been doing this now for about 6-7 years.

Been doing the same routine - mixing it up just a little with bircks etc as the season progresses - but it generally looks like this.

Mon Swim 1 hr (most swims open water)
Tue Run 4-6 miles (one run day harder than the other)
Wed Bike 20-24 miles (higher PE than the long ride)
Thur Run 4-6 miles
Fri Swim 1 hr
Sat Long Run 8-10 miles
Sun Long Bike 50 miles

I'm a middle of the pack guy in the Sprint to Oly distance. used to be much faser, but now I take meds which slow my HR, so I dont see the point of interval training anymore. I used to do more of that stuff in the past.

I do a couple sprint tris and 1-2 Olys per year.
Also do 1-2 open water ocean swims each summer - 1 mile to 5k distance.

Until I find more free time, a HIM may not be possible, but its always an aspriation

I think your schedule is fine if keeps you happy and allows you to meet whatever goals you have.  At 8-10hrs/wk, it is ceratinly possible to do a HIM.  You'd just have to be a little more creative in your use of time than your current schedule.  Again, there's no need for that unless it's something you'd really like to do for some reason.  Same with altering your schedule in order to try to get a little faster again.  You could do it, but there's no reason to do so unless it's something you really want to try.  Doesn't sound like either of those is of critical importance to you, so keep at what you're doing and enjoy.

I came "this" close to qualifying for the 70.3 WC a couple of years ago on 8-10 hours/week training.  You can be quite successful at the HIM distance with that amount of training.

I guess I'm not understanding the question. You seem happy with it and have used it for many years and it works with your life schedule. ? Sorry, just not understanding what you are looking for here.

if it works for you and fits your schedule keep it up.  the only thing that anyone here could comment on is what you are doing during those workouts.  do you switch it up any or are the workouts the same set every week?

The reason I ask is that -for example- I've been told that's a lot of volume crammed into Sat and Sun and that could put me at risk of injury. One cyclist also once told me I'd be better off finding another bike session. Another told me I needed some light weight training, even at the expense of some of the endurance work. Yes this schedule works for me, I do it, but I'm open to other ideas.

In a perfect world I would have you separate your long run and long bike by three days but you gotta make your schedule work for you and not you working for your schedule.

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"

Fact is, it's tough. Best bet is to do the training that you can, and let the chips fall where they may.
