As previously said in new to all this. ... so as essential kit goes do I NEED a tri suit? I only ask Coz unlike u fine specimens out there my shape doesn't lend itself well to the snuggnes(bag of potatoes wrapped in cling film springs to mind! )

I wear tri shorts and tri top so no suit. But they are both snug. You want this for less drag in water and less resistance against wind on bike. Run doesn't matter. I wouldn't be too concerned about how you think you look. It won't matter on race day. Nobody cares. Nobody is paying attention. People are focused on the race and their own insecurities about how they look. They won't be focusing on how you look.

My first races, I can't even remember what I wore. But it wasn't a Tri suit.
Just have shorts that you are comfortable with and a shirt that you can apply sunscreen easily to your shoulders, neck and ears.
As I got more comfortable racing, I started to tinker with what I was wearing. During training BRics with my team was a great opportunity to see what worked and what didn't.
Don't worry. You'll get there. All of us are still tinkering.

I wear tri shorts and a regular top. I wear a wetsuit in all races so it doesn't matter that the top isn't very efficient in the swim because it's covered. Without tri shorts, I would have to try and pull on bike shorts in T1 and pull on running shorts in T2.

You only need to wear what you'll be comfortable in.

E.g: These guys do something like this every year
