Overall Rank = 58/214
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 4/16
Pre-race routine:

Packed night before. Same as usual. Up at 4:30. OJ at home. AM necessities. Filled water bottles. Left. Banana in car. Hit gas station for some coffee because DD not open until 5:30. Sipped until got to park. Checked in. Body marked. Pinned on chip. Set up transition. 1st one on my rack! So I got an end spot! Sweet. 3rd rack in from the swim side, and so also 3rd rack from the run out! Bike computer not registering MPH or cadence, despite it working yesterday after I changed sensor battery. Went to car for coffee and PB Clif Bar before hitting bathroom one last time. Ended up getting it to turn on before transition closed at 6:45am. Phew! VERY humid out.
Event warmup:

The usual. Walked about 10 mins, stretched, jogged 3-5 minutes. Did some strides this time. Checked out transitions and bike turn layout coming through parking lot both ways. Adjusted speed laces one last time. Dropped off shoes/socks in transition and walked 1/4 mile to swim start. Rehearsing mental preparation. Swam a bit to warm up and some on tempo trainer at race pace. Felt fine. Nice people. Saw some folks from the club.
Swim
  • 08m 15s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

Water very murky. Almost no visibility. Not a lake one would choose to swim in, for sure! Had mentally prepared to deal with any anxiety or uncertainty on the swim. Tempo Trainer at 1:05. A little faster than last tri at 1:10. A certain sequence of sighting per number of strokes. Stuck with it through the first 200 - 250 yds. Then HR went up and started to get a little panicky. Very odd because this did not happen in last tri in the ocean at 880 yds! Backstroked 6-8 strokes, then went back at it, then again so breaststroked for about 10 strokes, and once more, but then just swam it in. All in all, it was ok. Beat last year's time by 30+ seconds.
What would you do differently?:

More training at specific race tempo for longer OWS's.
Transition 1
  • 00m 38s
Comments:

Really felt great. Very quick. 2nd in AG and 15th overall! Ate 2 shot blocks.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing except possibly run quicker
Bike
  • 29m 9s
  • 10 miles
  • 20.58 mile/hr
Comments:

Pushed very hard. Kept it at about 20mph the whole time. Large chain ring. I realized about 3/4 way through that if I had put into 1 or 2 higher gears, I would have been cruising along at 21.5 or so. Felt like I started gassing about 3/4 mile from T2. Ate 1st GU gel on first loop backside and 2nd further along on back loop on 2nd pass. Passed by a handful of very speedy guys, but passed a ton of other people.
What would you do differently?:

Ride in higher gear. Interval work has been helping, but need more focused aerobic work and more consistent interval work to increase sustained power.
Transition 2
  • 00m 44s
Comments:

A little clumsy with socks, but not too bad. 5/16 AG. 52 overall.
What would you do differently?:

Look into different socks that may roll on more easily.
Run
  • 24m 27s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

Man! Despite pushing very hard on bike, legs did not feel totally dead. Felt better than usual off the bike - probably from the number of bricks I did during the last month. Local club member there volunteering, ringing the cowbell to cheer us on as we ran by. Really pumped me up. About 1.25 miles out from the finish, was passed by another AG'er who was really moving at a nice clip. Decided to do everything in my power to keep up with him. Felt like barfing and walking a couple times, but persevered. We were passing people left and right. Skipped last water station. Don't know if he was aware I was there, but shortly before last turn, I turned on full speed. Flew by him and never looked back. Crowd cheered me as I hauled through finish line. Left it all out there. Beat him by 30". Another AG'er came up afterward and congratulated me. Said he tried to catch up but couldn't. That felt awesome. Beat last year's run by 1:33!
What would you do differently?:

More bricks and build that long run. I know I can get under 8 min. Just need more steady base building.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking, drinking, eating.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need more time in saddle. Know what I need to do. More bricks. Longer rides. More intervals. Have got to get a better handle on the swim.

Event comments:

Great food. Fresh fruit. Plenty of drinks. Hotdogs and Hamburgers grilling. Very nice small local race. Lots of local club members and cycle training center folks there. Nice to see familiar faces.

Grateful for my AG place. Last year's field was more competitive, and this year's time would have placed me at 8th.
