So jealous! I was in Flagstaff a few years ago on vacation and had some great runs/rides. I got some routes from a bike shop there and noticed that one went past a lake (Mormon Lake?) Thought great, maybe I can get in a swim, took my suit and goggles along, but when I rode out there was NO water. For some reason it struck me as kind of funny/tragic. Hope the Mormons had water back in their day.
LOL, that's too funny!
Yes, Flag is AMAZING! The ride on Lake Mary Road to Mormon Lake is a fantastic one - no lights, huge bike lane and you can easily loop around and get 80+ miles in!
The lake you ride by on the way to Mormon Lake is Upper and Lower Lake Mary. Upper has water, Lower does not. There is a triathlon every year - sprint, Oly and HIM that is awesome! Upper Lake Mary is very shallow, and muddy, but still swimmable.
Nope, no water in Mormon Lake. Not sure when the lake actually had water, it's more of a marsh now and definitely nothing you could do any water sports in. The small community there is where my son and I went horseback riding. The sign as you enter the community says "population 50-5000" - lol! It's a neat area, lots of camping but I'm sure in the winter it's a ghost town (and Lake Mary Road is closed at some point in the winter ).
The whole area is beautiful and I just love visiting up here!
We are already planning a week+ vacation up here next year. Glad you enjoyed it! |
