Hi, There is an ironman distance event I would really like to do on 26th July next year, BUT our family holiday has to be 27th June - 11 th July. So I will be forced to take a two week break from swimming and cycling although I will be able to get in short runs. If I were to follow a 20 week training plan I would effectively miss weeks 17 and 18. Would it work if I started the plan 22 weeks out from the event so I am missing the two week taper and then do those when I return for the two weeks before the event? I am going to use Matt Fitzgeralds Super Simple Ironman Training Plan as I used his equivalent for a half ironman and found it worked well for me.

I would start two weeks early.  Use the vacation as your taper to rest up.  Then come back and hit it real good for a week (July 12th-19th) and the week after is race week.

Thank you, I think that is what I will do. The event opened this morning so I am now entered :-). It is on 26th July and I will also do a half ironman on 25th May (which I did this year). I have a sprint this weekend and another on 27th September, then I will start thinking about building my base fitness over the winter and hit the training plan a few weeks early.

Just try to stay active on vacation and don't let your diet go completely off the rails.

Look how far you have come in such a short period of time. Congrats on entering your first Ironman Distance Race.

Hi Todd, thanks! I decided to just go for it. I am repeating the half I did this year which falls around 8 weeks before the full, my goal this year is not to race with whooping cough and an injury and not to come last! :-)

Congrats on your entry! That is awesome! I am sure it will all work out for you and you'll be
ready before vacation. Is there any way you could just swim a little or even get on a spin or exercise bike while
there? I tend to get really creative as I travel quite often during training seasons. Going to Oregon in October
and doing IMFL on November 1. Sort of nervous but I think I am going to do HEAVY running while there. Maybe
1:30 runs all three days or something. Won't have time to bike or swim either.

Good luck for ImFL - that is actually where we will be vacationing. I hope to run early as being from the UK the heat and humidity are a factor for me, but I am conscious that this is a family holiday and I don't want it dominated by my training. We will be staying in a villa so I am hoping to find one on a community with a gym that I could use a couple of times. We will have a pool but it will only be a back yard pool so again unless there is a community pool I probably won't get much done. Gotta balance family time with training, if I can get out early before everyone else is up then great otherwise family comes first for those two weeks. Hopefully I will get enough done to keep ticking over.

Using a high-volume schedule for many months is not the best tactic. Build speed and skill several months out, and then transition to a high-volume IM plan.

I went into the pool area (as this was a pool swim) and got body marked. That's when it hit me that I was there to race - this was not a clinic.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

This plan is an advanced plan in terms of volume and intensity and appropriate for someone who is looking to go under 5:00 and as fast as 4:30. There isn’t a lot of fluff in the plan.
