Precipitation
Total Time = 4h 51m 49s
Overall Rank = 12/99
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 1/13
Pre-race routine:

dumpy hotel, quality inn, up at 5:30, coffee, 2 cliff bars, whey, banana, sports drink, drove to site, pouring rain during transition set up, everything wet

Event warmup:

didn't warm up, still raining, stayed in the water for warmth
Swim
  • 25m 49s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

started on beach at front of my wave, jogged out then started pretty fast, felt good the whole swim, was catching the wave in front of me within the first few minutes, had a really good swim, when I stood up at the end I looked at my watch and couldn't believe the time, in the 24's
What would you do differently?:

not a thing
Transition 1
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

T1 was OK, everything was wet and it was raining so decided to leave the sunglasses
What would you do differently?:

not much
Bike
  • 2h 37m 5s
  • 56 miles
  • 21.39 mile/hr
Comments:

plan was to settle in at a HR of 144 for first half, then have a higher HR in the second half, also with the rain and humidity, drink alot. First 5 miles, tried to settle in to the HR zone, then go from there, blew by the first water exchange at mile 13, next one wasn't until 35, ran out of sports drink at about 25, switched the bottles at the exchange and ended up drinking about 5.5 in total +3 gels, was able to raise my HR for the second half of the race as planned, partially due to all of the hills
What would you do differently?:

not much, felt I executed OK, grab the water at the first stop, at the third stop, exchanged a bottle and received water instead of sports drink by mistake,
Transition 2
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

no issues, took a second to relieve myself
What would you do differently?:

not much
Run
  • 1h 45m 30s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

goal was to start 8-10 beats higher than the bike, HR monitor not functioning so went with pace, felt very comfortable for first 6-8 miles, drank at every station, gels every 2-3 miles, mile 11 or so felt a little tighter in my legs, and it started getting a little tougher, kept drinking at each station, by the very end, legs were just starting to cramp a little, but was able to finish OK and cramps never really came in, it had stopped
What would you do differently?:

maybe try some salt tablets, pace felt OK, HR was in the right zone,
Post race
Warm down:

walked around, drank water

What limited your ability to perform faster:

later in the run, some fatigue

Event comments:

very happy to PR and win my age group, especially happy with the swim and the bike and still came through with a solid run, goal was sub-5 and ended at 4:51

My issue is that I am currently deployed and training outside is proving difficult, especially on the bike. I have found a safe 10km running loop but I am struggling with the bike training.

This is not an easy task, especially for the “9-to-5er” with family. But you can do it – all without sacrificing your marriage, job or family.
