Sunny
Total Time = 1h 15m 20s
Overall Rank = 182/399
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 18/25
Pre-race routine:

Race changed from Olympic distance to Sprint due to heavy rains that caused flooding on parts of bike and run courses.
Event warmup:

warmup swim
Swim
  • 15m 16s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 02s / 100 meters
Comments:

Very crowded start. Got roughed up quite a bit. Good effort and good results considering this was the Championship race with so many strong athletes.
Transition 1
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

Ran fast all the way through T1 (several hundred yards). Helmet on and running with Bike in about 10 seconds. Shoes already on bike so rode with feet on top for 200 yards to get up to speed. Somehow front part got folded under and couldn't get velcro around right so cost a few seconds pulling on it while not pedaling. Right shoe came off pedal while not on foot completely and almost lost shoe!!
What would you do differently?:

Pull on front with hands while putting foot in shoe.
Bike
  • 32m 31s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 23.07 mile/hr
Comments:

Pushed very hard and rode the best I could ride. 19th out of 25 shows just how strong these guys were. Got passed by 3 bikes in a row and looked down to see that I was going 24.5 mph on a flat! Wow there were some fast bikes out there.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Super fast. Long run to run out cost me some spots here since I run slower than most of the guys in my group apparently. Time from bike in to getting on shoes and heading toward run out was probably 25 seconds at most. Very long run in transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, it was really perfect.
Run
  • 24m 17s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 52s  min/km
Comments:

7:45, 7:49, 8:39 = 7:50 pace

Ran as well as I can with sore ankle.
What would you do differently?:

run faster
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

being old and slow

Event comments:

Hy-Vee is big time with lots of top pros in it for the money and racing on the blue carpet is a one of a kind experience.

Solid effort.  The 5150 US Championships is legit.  Tough competition.  I was in the Age Group race since I didn't qualify this year.  I think I qualified for 2015 though.  I though bike route was awesome.  Super fast and super fun.  Changing to a sprint was a bummer, but like you, I was a little banged up (sore hip muscle) and the shorter race probably helped more than it hurt.

Great race!!! I also did the age group. Got a free registration. I did qualify for the 5150, actually, but opted out. Sort of glad I did now.
