Split Second Racing

Sunny
Total Time = 3h 18m 53s
Overall Rank = 79/127
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 3/5
Pre-race routine:

There was no packet pickup except for race morning. It was hectic. I felt rushed because of this in transition.
Event warmup:

I was nervous, this was my first Olympic! Had about 30 seconds in the water before they made us get out.
Swim
  • 25m 13s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 41s / 100 meters
Comments:

5th female out of the water. Not sure what # I was out of the water overall. I liked the time trial start, less being kicked. I did run into a metal pole sticking out of the water (luckily only with my hand) it did have a small white Styrofoam floatie on it, but this still seemed dangerous and scared the crap out of me.
What would you do differently?:

Look out for metal poles? I would not change much I am a strong and confident swimmer.
Transition 1
  • 06m 39s
Comments:

There was a .33 mile run to transition. You were allowed to leave shoes to run in. I ran in flip flops and with my wet suit pulled half way down. The worst part of this transition was that myself and two other people went the wrong way for probably about 100 yards. At one point it was unclear which way to go. There were some spectators (I hope not volunteers) at this point and they said they had no idea which way we were supposed to go. So we made a choice and we eventually realized we chose wrong. Made a turn once we realized this and luckily got back on the right track easily but with a bit of a detour.
What would you do differently?:

Go left instead of right.
Bike
  • 1h 32m 24s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 16.10 mile/hr
Comments:

26th out of females. I am still new to biking so I was happy with my performance especially on this hilly course. I had a gu around mile 4 and then another around 20.

It was overcast during the bike too which was nice.
What would you do differently?:

I could be better with my gears.
Transition 2
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

T2 went smoothly.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 1h 13m 8s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 11m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

33rd female out of 41. I am very disappointed with this but I know I can do better! I walked portions and I know I can complete this without walking at all! When I hit the uphill sand portion my body just started walking without even discussing it with my brain! Ha!
What would you do differently?:

Be more prepared for the trail portion.
Post race
Warm down:

Was greeted at finish with a dixie cup of water and told they were out of bottles. Super. It was high 80s and humid. I walked for a bit to cool down but mainly refilled half a dozen dixie cups.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I don't want to make excuses but the humidity killed me. I should have done more bricks before this as well. I let my mind get the best of me.

Event comments:

I'm sorry but this is the worst run race I have done. While it is only my 4th triathlon I was very disappointed and would never do it again. No one knew what they were doing for the swim, to collect park tickets and breakfast tickets after the race the volunteers were actually yelling at people. The breakfast I paid $13 dollars for wasn't worth $2. While there were lots of volunteers, there were none when I went the wrong way to T1 and obviously that sucks.

Age Group: 1/5
Overall: 5/127
Performance: Good

Course: Two laps. Directions were unclear about which buoy was the turn around point. The race director said it incorrectly the first time but then corrected himself the second. Unfortunately though you were lucky if you heard him the first time so I don't blame the people who got a bit of an advantage by cutting out one buoy on the beginning of the second lap. I only even know this happened because my mother was spectating.

Course: Hilly course. Lots of State Troopers at every turn. Luckily I always felt like I was going the right way because of them:) In my opinion the bike portion was the best run. I do not have a bike computer so it would have been nice to at least have a sign or two saying the distance but I was able to guess based on my time along the way. There was one area that had major potholes but there were rough road signs, volunteers warning us to slow down and the RD had sent out an email about it the day before.
