Subject: What did you learn from your test ride?

I thought this article was interesting and thought I'd share for those that may not venture towards the other site.

Worth spreading. Josh certainly has plenty of knowledge to share.

Now go buy a $450 pump!

I don't want to believe that article.

I want to believe that each bike has a unique feel, that I can discern, and would pay thousands more to enjoy and appreciate the subtle difference.

All respect to Josh, he's very knowledgeable, but I thoroughly disagree… You can tell the difference between bikes… they do "behave" differently.

I have quite a few bikes (and had many more over the years) and there's just certain bikes that "feels better" than others and it's not only about fit (right now, I have two bikes that have identical fit, but feels quite different… one being slightly softer and mellow and the other more aggressive and just plain fun… I use them for different types of riding…)

I think one of the key take-away from the article (and one that i DO agree with) is that there's lots of perceptions that dictates what we ride. (ex the wheels discussion in the article). Same goes for frame materials… carbon is supposed to be comfortable and aluminum supposed to be stiff. A modern aluminum frame can be really comfortable (without giving up stiffness) and you can find carbon frames that are quite uncomfortable or carbon frames that are super stiff… changed in materials, manufacturing methods and design will change the perception over time….

I'm not at all surprised that you (and many others) would feel that way.  In fact, it's a central point of the article that almost everyone does.  Perception is an interesting phenomenon.  However, I do strongly doubt that you would do any better than other experieinced riders in the types of blinded studies he described.  Others have done them with similar results.

Definitely a good read. My take-away from it, though it seems obvious, is that test rides aren't a good measure of how well a bike actually suits you.

I think that if you had two different bikes dialed in to your exact numbers with identical components, your saddle & pedals, that a relatively long ride over varied terrain (the same ride, though) might be telling. Most of the studies were done in much more controlled environments. Also, it's a really rare bike shop that would let you perform those kind of test rides. So your basic rough dial-in then a few laps around flat city blocks (or even up and down a few rollers in the vicinity) to see how it feels, that usually comprises 'test rides,' isn't very effective. Good to have his review and some metrics on that.

I am in the market for a new road bike, at several local bike stores I will test ride several bikes. Other than basic fit and components, how should I compare them while doing a test ride?
