My research says otherwise:  I had three beers last Friday night and then set a PR at my sprint tri the next morning.

This is what kills me.  No more ice cold beers in the hot tub after a hard workout.  I quit.

I'll come out of temporary retirement for "beer waves".

I'm going to a beer festival on Saturday and running a 5k on Sunday... I'm expecting a PR.

From the article:
"In fact, research has shown that athletes who consume alcohol at least once a week are more than twice as likely as non-drinkers to get injured. Researchers attribute this in part to the “hangover effect,” which has been shown to reduce sports performance by up to 11 percent. "

Guess I'll just try to work 11% harder!

Yeah I've set PBs before after a couple of beers the night before. But any more than 3, times start going downhill fast.

FWIW- I set a 3min PR in an 8 mi race yesterday, after having a drink the prior night.  (I'm jazzed)

anyhoo- I also saw this article today:

My study with n=1 subjects indicates that wine hinders performance, in a big way. If I have a single glass within a couple hours of a workout, I will be very weak the next day. Hard liquor has no discernible effect. Beer is recovery fuel. Nothing, even a balanced meal, helps my body recover from a hard workout like a stout. That stuff is magic. Of course, it is seldom that I have more than one drink at a time.

obviously.

for me personally I have no problems with drinking the night before or a few hours after a workout.  I have come off some very social evenings the next morning and absolutely crushed my workouts setting either pacing PR's on the run or power PR's on the bike.  I know a local swimmer who threw up in the parking lot of a swim meet after a long night, walked in and onto the deck, swam his race, and finished as a USA Swimming Masters national champion.

About 40 years ago, we sat around a campfire drinking beer till the wee hours. 50 mile Cat3 road race the next day at 9:00am. The first 25 or so miles were living he . . . I remember gradually feeling better and finally getting to the point where I thought, "if I could survive that, what he heck, go for it". Darn near won that race, jumped with about 800 yards to go, caught at the line by 3 guys, ended up with 4th.

The doctor says not to run again. Ever. Needless to say, I’m not taking this very well. Can I recover from this? Where should I go from here?
