Subject: Absolute noob, need advice.
Hi. My name is Chris. I'm from Massachusetts, USA. I really like the sport of triathlon, it sounds amazing. I'm pretty good at running, and semi-good at biking. I'm pretty bad at swimming though, and I don't really like swimming either.

I would like to start training for a sprint tri, but it is also early fall, and not a lot of triathlons are being held in the next 6 months, due to cold setting in. It is also hard to train in the cold, I would imagine. So,, how should I train during fall and winter, to be ready for spring?

Also, I'm 15. Is that too young? Should I wait a few years? Do triathlons take 15-year-olds?

Thanks in advance,
Chris.

P.S. I'm new to this forum, so if this post should go anywhere else, please tell me.

If you're pretty bad at swimming then you shouldn't be doing a tri this season anyway. Set a plan in place to start doing tris next season, and make a point of getting in lots of pool time between now and then. Swimming in a triathlon can be a pretty nerve-wracking experience (open-water, lots of people around you... touching you, possibly kicking you or elbowing you) you want to make sure you're pretty confident in the swim.

15 is not too young - check into local triathlon clubs/teams. We've got a club up here that has programs for kids as young as 8.

Cwest.  You are totally in the right place.  Ask all of your questions here, or go find a good coach.  Welcome!

Welcome to BT! I wish I was thinking about starting out as early as you are (albeit I'm only 10 years older than you are hehe), as my swimming would be more refined by now. I recently purchased a bicycle trainer (not a person but rather a mechanism for propping the wheel up (on a flywheel) to ride indoors. This is how I'll be getting through the Iowa winter for my bike training. I also happened to inherit a treadmill from a relative so this will be my go to for terribly inclement weather running. However, as my past running would show, I enjoy trekking through most! As for swimming, I'll be going to my University pool; perhaps your HS has one or your local fitness club (Y, etc.). I had a similar impression about swimming but I've really come to enjoy it over the last 3-4 months (although I haven't done any long kick sets like others on here have haha). Good luck with training this winter season and pick a fun tri next spring and enjoy it!
