Subject: RE: Biking HWY 101 (I'm an Oregonian when not overseas. ) Have not biked it personally but he should be aware that it's not a particularly safe route for cycling. The road in many places has little shoulder and is narrow with lots of blind curves. Pretty much every year I hear about cyclists killed by cars on 101, including some well-known local cyclists in my hometown who were definitely safety conscious and very experienced at riding such roads. Weather can also be erratic at any time of year--dense fog and drizzle are common, especially in the morning, occasionally high winds. That being said, t's a beautiful route and it's very popular with self-supported bike tourists, both from the US and oveseas. Anyone who does it should probably plan the route conservatively (to allow for late starts due to morning fog, and make sure they are not cycling after dark ), and bring high-visibility clothing (and, of course, rain/wind jacket ) and lights. Most of the towns along the coast are quite small and accomodation can fill up in the summer--I'd book ahead. |
